Microplastic/nanoplastic toxicity in plants: an imminent concern

Tapati Roy et al.

Summary: The toxic impact of microplastics/nanoplastics in plants and the food chain is a major concern. While there has been significant research on their effects in aquatic ecosystems, their impact in terrestrial ecosystems is not well understood. Studies have shown that microplastics/nanoplastics can alter plant morphology, physiology, biochemistry, and genetics to varying degrees. However, there is a research gap in understanding how microplastics/nanoplastics enter plants, factors influencing their phytotoxicity levels, and potential strategies for remediation in terms of food safety and security. This review provides an overview of the routes of accumulation and transmission of microplastics/nanoplastics in plant tissues, factors influencing plant stress, and potential solutions to improve food quality and quantity.

Uptake and translocation of nano/microplastics by rice seedlings: Evidence from a hydroponic experiment

Yingying Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that both 80 nm and 1 μm PS microspheres were detected in the roots, stems, and leaves of rice seedlings, mainly aggregating on cell walls and in the intercellular regions. This suggests that rice seedlings can accumulate nano/microplastics in their roots and translocate them to aboveground tissues, potentially transferring them to higher trophic levels through the food chain.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of nanoparticle accumulation on plant growth, photosynthesis, oxidative stress responses, and metabolism in constructed wetlands. The results showed that the accumulation of nanoparticles limited the growth and photosynthesis of submerged macrophytes. The plants also experienced oxidative stress and disruptions in metabolic pathways. Furthermore, the efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus removal from water was reduced. These findings enhance our understanding of the interactions between aquatic macrophytes and nanoparticles in constructed wetlands.

Effects of polyethylene and polylactic acid microplastics on plant growth and bacterial community in the soil

Yuhang Lian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of polyethylene MPs (PEMPs) and polylactic acid MPs (PLAMPs) on the physio-biochemical performance and metabolomic profile of soybean, as well as the bacterial communities in soil. The results showed that PEMPs had no toxicity on the plant growth, while 0.1% PLAMPs significantly reduced root length. MPs in plant leaves affected peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) activities. Metabolomics study indicated that amino acid metabolism was the significantly affected pathway. Additionally, only 0.1% PLAMPs altered the bacterial communities in the rhizosphere soil.

Summary: Microplastics derived from plastic mulch film can negatively affect the growth, physiological processes, and gene expressions of rice plants, including reducing plant height and dry weight, inducing oxidative stress, and regulating gene expressions. These negative effects can be mitigated with the growth of plants, and microplastics from polyethylene mulch film have a relatively stronger negative impact on rice plants compared to microplastics from a PBAT-based biodegradable film.

Effects of polystyrene microplastics on uptake and toxicity of phenanthrene in soybean

Guanghui Xu et al.

Summary: Microplastics can decrease the uptake of organic pollutants by soybean plants, with micron-size MPs showing a stronger inhibition than nano-size MPs. The combined exposure of micron-size MPs and phenanthrene has higher toxicity to soybean plants compared to nano-size MPs and phenanthrene, with the largest MPs having the highest toxicity. The genotoxic and oxidative damage induced by micron-size MPs lead to decreased activity of soybean roots, resulting in lower uptake of phenanthrene.
