Melatonin stimulates postharvest ripening of apples by up-regulating gene expression of ethylene synthesis enzymes

Antia Verde et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of exogenous melatonin on postharvest ripening in apples and its interaction with the ethylene biosynthesis process. The results suggest that melatonin can improve apple quality during postharvest ripening by promoting color and flavor change, and extending fruit firmness. The effect of melatonin appears to be mediated in part by up-regulation of the transcriptional activity of the ethylene biosynthesis genes MdACS1 and MdACO1 during the climacteric peak, thus increasing ethylene availability. Melatonin-induced changes in ethylene production correlated well with changes in fruit quality.
