Activation of CO2 assimilation during photosynthetic induction is slower in C4 than in C3 photosynthesis in three phylogenetically controlled experiments

Lucia Arce Cubas et al.

Summary: Despite their importance, C-4 species are still understudied compared to C-3 species. In this study, the differences in photosynthetic induction responses between C-4 and C-3 species were characterized in three phylogenetically linked pairs of Alloteropsis, Flaveria, and Cleome genera. The results showed that C-4 species have slower activation of CO2 assimilation during photosynthetic induction than C-3 species, but the mechanism behind these differences varied between different genera.

The photosynthetic response of C3 and C4 bioenergy grass species to fluctuating light

Moon-Sub Lee et al.

Summary: The experiment showed that under fluctuating light conditions, C-4 bioenergy grass species assimilated more carbon than C-3 species, with both types assimilating approximately 16% less carbon than expected based on steady state measurements. There was little diversity in the response to fluctuating light among C-3 species, while differences among the four NADP-ME species in C-4 species were evident. The diversity observed among C-4 species in response to fluctuating light suggests that targeting photosynthetic efficiency could increase C-4 bioenergy grass productivity.

Metabolic profiles in C3, C3-C4 intermediate, C4-like, and C4 species in the genus Flaveria

Gian Luca Borghi et al.

Summary: Metabolite profiling and (13)CO(2)labelling studies of Flaveria species reveal the progressive re-wiring of various metabolic processes in the evolution from C(3)to C(4)photosynthesis. This includes the relocation of enzymes, establishment of shuttles, and changes in the concentration of organic acids. The findings support current models and provide further insights into the evolutionary path of C(4)photosynthesis in the genus Flaveria.

Increased bundle-sheath leakiness of CO2 during photosynthetic induction shows a lack of coordination between the C4 and C3 cycles

Yu Wang et al.

Summary: A study using a dynamic model of NADP-malic enzyme C-4 photosynthesis found that induction of the C-4 pathway was faster than that of the C-3 pathway during transitions from dark or shade to high light, resulting in a transient increase in bundle-sheath CO2 leakiness. The study also developed a new method to track CO2 leakiness under nonsteady-state conditions. The results showed that CO2 leakiness was significantly higher in the early stages of induction compared to steady-state conditions.

Exploiting differences in the energy budget among C4 subtypes to improve crop productivity

Xinyou Yin et al.

Summary: The authors propose a C-4 ideotype that combines NAD(P)-ME and PEP-CK types, utilizing low chloroplastic ATP requirements, eliminating the need for cyclic electron transport, and increasing theoretical phi CO2. This ideotype is projected to have a 10% yield advantage over NADP-ME-type crops and over 50% advantage over C-3 counterparts, providing a new avenue for improving photosynthesis in both C-3 and C-4 crops.

Drivers of Natural Variation in Water-Use Efficiency Under Fluctuating Light Are Promising Targets for Improvement in Sorghum

Charles P. Pignon et al.

Summary: Improving leaf intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) is essential for reducing crop freshwater consumption. Studies have shown that leaf responses to fluctuations in light intensity significantly impact overall plant performance, with some traits showing potential to enhance iWUE but also potential tradeoffs. Both photosynthetic and stomatal traits play a role in determining iWUE, but their interactions and natural diversity in different species need further investigation for optimizing trait combinations.

Gas exchange measurements in the unsteady state

Aaron J. Saathoff et al.

Summary: Leaf level gas exchange is a common technique for measuring leaf physiological properties in real-time, traditionally requiring steady-state conditions for accuracy. However, a new dynamic assimilation method based on first principles allows for quicker gas exchange measurements, improving efficiency for high throughput applications.
