Assessment of soil microbial and enzyme activity in the rhizosphere zone under different land use/cover of a semiarid region, India

Archana Meena et al.

Summary: The study found that soil carbon and nitrogen content, as well as microbial biomass carbon, basal respiration, substrate-induced respiration, and enzyme activities, were significantly reduced under cultivated sites compared to forest sites. Positive correlations were observed between soil carbon and microbial activity, and between soil moisture and urease activity. The study suggests that soil microbial parameters and enzyme activity are key indicators of soil health and fertility, and that conservation of natural forest and minimizing land disturbances can help maintain soil carbon stock.

Insights into the microbial diversity and structure in a full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plant with particular regard to Archaea

Grazyna Plaza et al.

Summary: By analyzing the microbial community structures and diversities in samples from different stages of a full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plant, this study aimed to show how treatment processes influenced the composition of Eubacteria and Archaea. The results indicate that Archaea were present in all stages of the WWTP, with differences observed in richness, diversity, and microbial composition between primary and secondary treatment samples.

Recent Developments in the Study of Plant Microbiomes

Bernard R. Glick et al.

Summary: Studying how beneficial bacteria promote plant growth has shown that specific soil microorganism consortia interact to benefit plant growth. Plants attract beneficial microorganisms based on their root exudates, excluding potentially pathogenic ones, and these consortia not only promote plant growth but also protect plants from environmental stresses. By understanding beneficial bacterial microbiomes, it may be possible to develop synthetic microbiomes where compatible bacteria work together to promote plant growth under various natural conditions.
