Probiotics: Potential novel therapeutics for microbiota-gut-brain axis dysfunction across gender and lifespan

Shikha Snigdha et al.

Summary: Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms that can have broad effects on the host body, including the immune, endocrine, cardiovascular, and central nervous systems, by influencing the gut microbial communities. Recent research suggests that probiotics may have therapeutic benefits for CNS conditions such as anxiety, depression, autism spectrum disorders, and Parkinson's disease. The influence of probiotics on the gut microbiome may interact with sex hormones, leading to potential gender-specific effects. Understanding the role of probiotics in microbiota-gut-brain axis-related dysfunction and the development of personalized probiotic therapeutic agents is of great importance.

Hypoglycaemic and anti-ageing activities of green alga Ulva lactuca polysaccharide via gut microbiota in ageing-associated diabetic mice

Yihan Chen et al.

Summary: Ageing-related type 2 diabetes is a significant public health problem that is increasing with population ageing. This study reveals that Ulva lactuca polysaccharide (ULP) can improve ageing-associated diabetes by modulating gut microbiota variation and regulating the expression levels of certain proteins. ULP shows potential as a nutraceutical for delaying or preventing the development of ageing-related type 2 diabetes.

Integrated transcriptomic and metabonomic analysis reveal mechanisms of disease resistance in apples induced by Wickerhamomyces anomalus

Lina Zhao et al.

Summary: The molecular mechanisms of disease resistance in apples induced by the antagonistic yeast Wickerhamomyces anomalus were investigated through transcriptomic and metabonomic analysis. The results showed that W. anomalus up-regulated genes related to resistance, plant signal transduction, synthesis of resistance-related substances, and antioxidant and stress resistance. Integrated analysis of the transcriptome and metabolome data revealed that multiple genes involved in various biosynthetic pathways were up-regulated, leading to improved disease resistance in apple fruit.

Metagenome-scale community metabolic modelling for understanding the role of gut microbiota in human health

Satyajit Beura et al.

Summary: Metabolic activities of microbial populations play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems. In the human gut, these microbial communities help with digestion and maintain biochemical homeostasis. Metagenome-scale community metabolic modelling is a useful approach to studying the metabolic role and interaction patterns of the gut microbiome. This method uses genomic information to simulate the metabolic behavior of the microbiome.

Age-related diseases, therapies and gut microbiome: A new frontier for healthy aging

Monica Barone et al.

Summary: The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in human health and becomes even more important in old age. Many studies have observed changes in the gut microbiome as people age, which are associated with age-related conditions. The gut microbiome also interacts with anti-age-related disease therapies. Therefore, developing microbiome-based intervention strategies could be an innovative approach for promoting healthy aging and longevity.

Fermented natural product targeting gut microbiota regulate immunity and anti-inflammatory activity: A possible way to prevent COVID-19 in daily diet

Quancen Li et al.

Summary: Low immune function increases vulnerability to bacterial and viral invasions, leading to influenza and organ inflammations, particularly among young and middle-aged individuals. Various studies have shown that natural products fermented by probiotics undergo beneficial changes in their active ingredients, providing strong nutritional value in terms of anti-oxidation, anti-aging, lipid metabolism regulation, anti-inflammatory effects, and improved immunity. Recent research has extensively examined the role of gut microbiota in enhancing immunity and anti-inflammatory activity. This review explores the modulating effects of probiotics and their fermented natural products on the body, including immune enhancement and anti-inflammatory activities through gut microbiota modulation, and discusses current understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved. Consumption of natural products fermented by probiotics in our daily diet may present a potential approach to prevent COVID-19.
