SCARECROW is deployed in distinct contexts during rice and maize leaf development

Thomas E. Hughes et al.

Summary: The flexible deployment of developmental regulators in plant development and evolution is crucial. The study reveals that the SCR genes in rice have a different function compared to those in Arabidopsis and maize. In rice, the SCR genes are essential for stomatal development, while their role in inner leaf patterning is different from that of Arabidopsis and maize.

Structures and mechanism of the plant PIN-FORMED auxin transporter

Kien Lam Ung et al.

Summary: This study reveals the molecular mechanism of PIN-mediated auxin transport through biophysical analysis and structural illustrations. The structure of Arabidopsis thaliana PIN8 is shown to form a homodimer with a clear auxin binding site. Additionally, the study reveals the characteristic of this transport mechanism, which resembles other transport proteins. These results provide a comprehensive molecular model for auxin recognition and transport and explain the core mechanism of polar auxin transport.

Maria Ermakova et al.

Summary: Introducing a C-4 photosynthetic mechanism into C-3 crops offers the potential to improve photosynthetic efficiency, biomass, and yield, especially in rice. The study showed that with enhanced levels of introduced C-4 proteins, a functional C-4 pathway could be achieved in rice.

Challenges and Approaches to Crop Improvement Through C3-to-C4 Engineering

Hongchang Cui

Summary: Given the challenge of increasing crop yields and improving resource efficiency due to a growing global population and dwindling natural resources, introducing C4 photosynthesis into C3 crops is seen as a key strategy. C4 plants are more efficient than C3 plants in photosynthesis and resource usage, especially in hot climates, offering high productivity potential. However, the engineering process involves complex challenges, such as incorporating essential C4 photosynthesis features into C3 plants.
