Engineering the N-glycosylation pathway of Nicotiana tabacum for molecular pharming using CRISPR/Cas9

Kathrin Goritzer et al.

Summary: Molecular pharming in plants offers exciting possibilities to address global access to modern biologics. However, differences in the N-glycosylation pathway can affect the properties of plant-derived proteins. In this study, CRISPR/Cas9 multiplex genome editing was used to generate Nicotiana tabacum lines lacking non-human N-glycan structures. This step represents progress towards establishing Nicotiana tabacum as a biologics platform for Global Health.

Plant-made dengue virus-like particles produced by co-expression of structural and non-structural proteins induce a humoral immune response in mice

Daniel Ponndorf et al.

Summary: This study describes the production of DENV VLPs in Nicotiana benthamiana using transient expression, resulting in VLPs that were comparable in appearance and size to those produced in mammalian cells. Immunogenicity assays in BALB/c mice showed that plant-made DENV1-SP + NSP VLPs led to a higher antibody response compared to other vaccine candidates.

On the verge of the market - Plant factories for the automated and standardized production of biopharmaceuticals

J. W. Huebbers et al.

Summary: The biopharmaceutical market is driven by recombinant proteins, mainly for vaccines and antibodies. Plant molecular farming as an alternative production method offers scalability and cost efficiency in upstream processes. However, lack of standardized process equipment has hindered approvals for pharmaceutical proteins from whole plants.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Fc gamma RIIB is a T cell checkpoint in antitumor immunity

Clara R. Farley et al.

Summary: In the context of cancer, the inhibitory Fc receptor FcγRIIB is upregulated on CD8(+) T cells in melanoma patients, and genetic deficiency of Fcgr2b enhances anti-tumor responses and reduces tumor burden. These findings suggest a cell-intrinsic role for FcγRIIB in suppressing tumor-infiltrating CD8(+) T cells.
