Soil specific enzyme stoichiometry reflects nitrogen limitation of microorganisms under different types of vegetation restoration in the karst areas

Hui Ling Guan et al.

Summary: The study revealed changes in microbial resource limitations during vegetation restoration in karst areas, with economic plantations and ecological forests showing the highest metabolic activity and soil organic carbon utilization efficiency. Microbial resource requirements promoted the production of specific enzymes in resource-deficient ecosystems, with microorganisms primarily facing nitrogen limitation.

The fate of carbon in check dam sediments

Yufei Yao et al.

Summary: Check dams are small engineering structures used worldwide for soil and water conservation. The sediment carbon trapped in these dams plays a crucial role in the carbon sink, but little is known about the carbon cycling processes in check dams. This review summarizes the stock, source, enrichment, distribution, stability, and mechanisms of sediment carbon in check dams, and emphasizes the need for further research on carbon mineralization and sequestration in check dam sediments.

Soil ecoenzymatic stoichiometry reveals microbial phosphorus limitation after vegetation restoration on the Loess Plateau, China

Miaoping Xu et al.

Summary: Exploring the limitations of soil microbial nutrient metabolism helps us understand the adaptability and response mechanisms of soil microbes in semi-arid ecosystems. This study found that the activity and stoichiometry of soil enzymes were significantly influenced by vegetation restoration patterns. Correlation analysis showed significant relationships between soil nutrients, moisture, pH, and enzymatic activities and stoichiometries. Microbial nutrient metabolism mainly suffered from phosphorus (P) limitation, and the C limitation of soil microbes significantly decreased after vegetation restoration.

Consistent Plant and Microbe Nutrient Limitation Patterns During Natural Vegetation Restoration

Yue Xue et al.

Summary: This study investigated the nutrient limitations of plant and microbial communities during natural vegetation restoration in China. The results showed that there was a shift from nitrogen limitation to phosphorus limitation as the restoration progressed. Soil nutrient stoichiometry, especially the soil C:N ratio, played a significant role in determining the nutrient limitations of plants and microbes.

Interpreting stoichiometric homeostasis and flexibility of soil microbial biomass carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus

K. Asada et al.

Summary: This study synthesizes existing soil and SMB C:N:P stoichiometric ratio datasets and finds that the microbial stoichiometric homeostasis and flexibility exhibit geographical patterns related to biome type, soil type, and precipitation. This improves our understanding of the relationships between terrestrial C and nutrient dynamics and microbial stoichiometric homeostasis and flexibility.

Contrasting patterns of microbial nutrient limitations between rhizosphere and bulk soil during stump sprout restoration in a clear-cut oak forest

Haibin Kang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microbial metabolic limitations in the rhizosphere and bulk soils during oak forest restoration in the Qinling Mountains, China. The results showed that microbial metabolism was primarily limited by soil carbon and phosphorus, and these limitations decreased as the restoration progressed. Rhizosphere soil microorganisms experienced stronger carbon limitation compared to those in bulk soil, and microbial carbon and phosphorus limitations in bulk soil were regulated by nutrient ratios.

Extracellular enzyme characteristics and microbial metabolic limitation in soil of subalpine forest ecosystems on the eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Xiangwen Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of extracellular enzymes and microbial metabolic limitation in subalpine forest ecosystems. The results show that elevation has significant effects on soil enzyme activities and carbon limitation of microbial metabolism. Soil pH, nutrient stoichiometric characteristics, and available nutrients are found to be the key factors affecting soil microbial metabolism in these ecosystems.

Ecoenzymatic stoichiometry reveals widespread soil phosphorus limitation to microbial metabolism across Chinese forests

Yongxing Cui et al.

Summary: This study used ecoenzymatic stoichiometry methods to investigate microbial nutrient limitations in forest soils across 181 sites in China. The results showed that phosphorus limitation was widespread in 80% of the forests, and it increased with soil depth and from boreal to tropical forests. This limitation was influenced by climate factors such as wetter and warmer conditions, as well as anthropogenic nitrogen deposition.

Extracellular enzyme stoichiometry reveals the carbon and phosphorus limitations of microbial metabolisms in the rhizosphere and bulk soils in alpine ecosystems

Yongxing Cui et al.

Summary: This study reveals the characteristics of microbial nutrient limitation in alpine ecosystems and identifies the direct regulation of soil nutrient stoichiometry on these limitations. Higher C and P limitations at high altitudes compared to low altitudes are mainly attributed to changes in soil temperature and moisture along the altitudinal gradient. The influences of vegetation on microbial metabolisms could decrease under the scenario of global warming.

Stoichiometric models of microbial metabolic limitation in soil systems

Yongxing Cui et al.

Summary: This study developed three new models that more consistently predicted microbial metabolic limitations, showing that microbial metabolism in high-latitude grasslands and low-latitude forests were predominantly limited by soil N and P, respectively. Increases in soil organic C with ecosystem development could intensify these limitations. Additionally, the new V-T model identified C limitation to microbial metabolism, which showed a consistent negative correlation with microbial C use efficiency among ecosystems, confirming that resource constraints regulate microbial resource allocation.
