Tracing hotspots of soil erosion in high mountain environments: how forensic science based on plant eDNA can lead the way. An opinion

Amaury Frankl et al.

Summary: High mountain environments are fragile and subject to accelerated soil erosion due to human disturbances and extreme weather events. Identifying erosion hotspots is crucial for effective mitigation strategies. While sediment source fingerprinting using geochemical properties has limitations in complex lithologies or shallow soils, environmental DNA (eDNA) from plant litter fixed onto fine soil particles shows promise as a targeted sediment fingerprinting method. Pioneering studies indicate that eDNA can detect vegetation communities and individual plant species, making it a valuable tool for identifying erosion hotspots and prioritizing ecological restoration efforts in high mountain environments.

Vegetation restoration facilitates belowground microbial network complexity and recalcitrant soil organic carbon storage in southwest China karst region

Linan Hu et al.

Summary: Soil organic carbon (SOC) is an important component of soil ecosystems, and understanding its interaction with soil microbial community is crucial for predicting carbon fate in soils following vegetation restoration. In this study, high-throughput sequencing and spectroscopy analysis were used to characterize SOC compounds and elucidate associated microbial community. The results showed that SOC, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, microbial biomass, dissolved organic carbon, available potassium, calcium, and soil moisture increased significantly with vegetation restoration. The abundance of certain carbon compounds and the dominant phyla of microorganisms were strongly related to SOC. The composition and assembly mechanisms of bacterial and fungal communities varied along the vegetation restoration chronosequence. Certain keystone genera and functional groups were identified in the microbial community, which were associated with enhanced recalcitrant SOC storage. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into microbe response and the impact of microbes on SOC storage in vegetation restoration processes.

Soil aggregate modulates microbial ecological adaptations and community assemblies in agricultural soils

Hao Liao et al.

Summary: Soil aggregates play a crucial role in providing heterogeneous microenvironments for soil microbiome and ecological processes. This study investigated the assembly processes of microbial communities in different aggregate sizes and found that geographic locations and aggregate sizes had significant effects on microbial composition. The study also revealed the importance of nutrient variables in shaping microbial community assembly, with different variables having distinct effects on different aggregate-size fractions. Moreover, the study demonstrated that fertilization had varying effects on microbial community assembly processes across aggregate sizes. These findings highlight the vulnerability of microbial assembly and functional traits in large aggregate-size fractions to nutrient changes and suggest their potential use as biological indicators for sustainable soil management.

Mixed-species plantations enhance soil carbon stocks on the loess plateau of China

Chen Gong et al.

Summary: Mixed-species plantations are more effective in enhancing soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks compared to monoculture plantations, especially in climate-limited regions and with different species combinations. Additionally, a stronger coupling relationship between soil total nitrogen (STN) and SOC stocks was observed in mixed-species plantations.

Summary: The study found that soil microbial community composition is more variable in early successional forests but converges in later successional forests; compositional dissimilarity of plant communities strongly predicts the relative influences of deterministic and stochastic processes.

Long-term fertilisation reveals close associations between soil organic carbon composition and microbial traits at aggregate scales

Yan Duan et al.

Summary: Long-term fertilisation has been found to increase the levels of free particulate organic carbon and occluded particulate organic carbon in soil, while decreasing the relative abundance of aromatic carbon in macroaggregates. Additionally, regardless of fertilisation regime, cellulose-degrading genes were more abundant in the clay and silt fractions compared to the macro- and microaggregates. Structural equation modeling revealed that soil pH and total nitrogen content were the major drivers affecting the physical fractions and chemical structure of soil organic carbon following long-term fertilisation, primarily through changes in bacterial community composition and fungal genes involved in carbon cycling within soil aggregates.

Organic amendments drive shifts in microbial community structure and keystone taxa which increase C mineralization across aggregate size classes

Xiaoyue Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of organic amendments on soil organic carbon mineralization and microbial community composition in different aggregate sizes. The results showed that organic amendments significantly altered carbon dynamics and microbial community structure, leading to an increase in C mineralization in all aggregates. The dominant microbial mechanisms responsible for the increase in C mineralization varied with aggregate size, highlighting the importance of microbial regulation of carbon dynamics at the aggregate level.

Root density drives aggregate stability of soils of different moraine ages in the Swiss Alps

Konrad Greinwald et al.

Summary: The study identified vegetation parameters as dominant controls of soil aggregate stability, with root density playing a major role in governing ASC for soils differing in moraine ages. Relationships between vegetation parameters and ASC development changed over time, with RLD being the most powerful predictor on young terrain and RMD becoming more important on older moraines. The findings suggest different mechanistic linkages between vegetation and hillslope stability during landscape development.

Changes in the soil microbial communities of different soil aggregations after vegetation restoration in a semiarid grassland, China

Zhijing Xue et al.

Summary: The stability of soil aggregate fractions and the duration of vegetation restoration significantly affect microbial community composition. Different sizes of soil aggregate fractions influence microbial diversity under different years of vegetation restoration, with the highest microbial diversity observed in large particle size aggregates.
