Benzodiazepines Remain Important Therapeutic Options in Psychiatric Practice

Steven L. Dubovsky et al.

Summary: Benzodiazepines and medications acting on benzodiazepine receptors have been proven to be effective treatments for various anxiety disorders, insomnia, and withdrawal syndromes. They can also be used as adjuncts in the treatment of depression and mania, as well as for medically ill patients. While sedation and cognitive impairment may occur, recent data does not support claims that benzodiazepines increase the risk of dementia. Furthermore, benzodiazepines are not frequently misused and are not lethal in overdose on their own.

Demographic, psychological, chronobiological, and work-related predictors of sleep disturbances during the COVID-19 lockdown in Italy

Federico Salfi et al.

Summary: During the lockdown in Italy, the majority of respondents reported a negative impact on their sleep, with female gender, advanced age, being a healthcare worker, living in southern Italy, longer confinement duration, and higher levels of depression, stress, and anxiety identified as the main predictors of sleep disturbances. Evening chronotypes were more vulnerable, while morning-type individuals showed a lower predisposition to sleep and psychological problems. Working from home was associated with less severe sleep disturbances.
