Rotenone Modulates Caenorhabditis elegans Immunometabolism and Pathogen Susceptibility

Danielle F. Mello et al.

Summary: Mitochondria play a vital role in host immunometabolism and their exposure to toxicants can disrupt immunometabolic pathways. This study investigates the effect of rotenone, a mitochondrial toxicant, on C. elegans immunometabolism and disease susceptibility. The results show that rotenone alters immunometabolic pathways and increases susceptibility to Pseudomonas aeruginosa while increasing resistance to Salmonella enterica. The activation of the mitochondrial unfolded protein response is implicated in this divergent effect.

Caenorhabditis elegans as a powerful tool in natural product bioactivity research

Ngoc Minh Ha et al.

Summary: Apart from synthetic and semisynthetic compounds, natural products are important sources of potential therapeutic lead compounds for various diseases. In vivo assays, particularly using Caenorhabditis elegans, provide valuable insights into the efficacy, adverse effects, and modes of action of these candidates. This review highlights commonly used techniques for screening the bioactivities of natural products, and explores recent studies on their applications in anti-aging, anti-neurodegeneration, anti-obesity, anti-infection, and gut health using the C. elegans model. Technological developments in instrumental analysis and emerging methods involving C. elegans are also discussed.
