Temperature anisotropy governed electrical conductivity tensor in a steady state dipole plasma: Spatially resolved experiments and modeling

Ayesha Nanda et al.

Summary: This study presents a generalization of electrical conductivity in a plasma confined in a dipole magnetic field with temperature anisotropy. The anisotropy influenced by the magnetic field distribution is found to be significant in the strong field region, affecting the Pedersen and longitudinal conductivity of electrons more than the Hall conductivity, while the effect of temperature anisotropy on Hall conductivity can be observed in ions. The research reveals new features in the conductivity tensor due to temperature anisotropy and the bidirectional nature of the dipole field, which contributes to a better understanding of electrical conduction in both laboratory and space dipole plasmas.

Dissipation of field-aligned currents in the topside ionosphere

Fabio Giannattasio et al.

Summary: For the first time, this study presents maps of power density dissipation features associated with field-aligned currents (FACs) in the topside ionosphere of the Northern hemisphere. The dissipation of FACs is not null and is enhanced in ionospheric regions with intense energy injection from the magnetosphere. These features are influenced by geomagnetic activity.

Characterizing spatially varying optical emissions in a steady-state dipole plasma: inversion based experiments and modeling

Sayak Bhattacharjee et al.

Summary: This study characterizes spatially varying optical emissions in a compact dipole plasma device driven by continuous mode microwaves. Two optical diagnostic techniques are employed to determine the local emissivities, and the existence of two bright belts separated by a darker band in the dipole plasma is confirmed by both the experimental and modeling results.

Magnetic confinement and instability in partially magnetized plasma

June Young Kim et al.

Summary: Discharge with an external magnetic field has promising applications for low-temperature plasmas, but understanding plasma transport and potential instabilities in partially magnetized plasmas is essential for improving confinement. Experimental results show that increasing magnetic field enhances magnetic confinement but also triggers instability, limiting plasma confinement. The transition of transport regimes and saturation of magnetic confinement can be observed through the variation of the edge-to-center plasma density ratio with the magnetic field.
