Multi-scale proper orthogonal decomposition analysis of instabilities in swirled and stratified flames

A. Procacci et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flow field dynamics of swirling and non-swirling flames produced from a stratified swirl burner. The results show that the presence of a bluff-body and shear layer contribute to the instabilities in the flow, and combustion affects these instabilities differently.

Simultaneous visualization of instantaneous unburnt and preheating zones in turbulent premixed flames under transverse acoustic excitations

Bo Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the unburnt and preheating zones of a turbulent premixed flame under transverse acoustic excitations using various measurement techniques. The results show that the distribution area of these zones increases with increasing sound pressure level. The presence of acoustic excitations also leads to wrinkled and bent edges in the unburnt and preheating zones. The study also reveals the influence of transverse acoustic waves on the flame behavior, including flame blow-off and the entry of cold reactants into the product zone.

Investigation of flame structure and precessing vortex core instability of a gas turbine model combustor with different swirler configurations

Amir Mardani et al.

Summary: This study conducts numerical simulations on a dual-swirl gas turbine model combustor using a three-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes approach. The objective is to analyze the ignition process and flame structure by studying the radicals involved, as well as investigate the flow field under different injector configurations. The results show good agreement with experimental data for velocity and temperature profiles. It is found that the build-up process of certain compounds and the balance between certain molecules play important roles in combustion initiation and flame formation.

Large-eddy simulation of unstable non-reactive flow in a swirler combustor

Nan Meng et al.

Summary: A comprehensive study was conducted using large eddy simulations to investigate the influence of unsteady non-reactive flow characteristics in a three-stage swirl combustion chamber. The results showed that large-scale vortex structures and periodic oscillations were the main factors contributing to the unsteady characteristics of the non-reactive flow.

Flame structures and thermoacoustic instabilities of centrally-staged swirl flames operating in different partially-premixed modes

Xinyao Wang et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates flame structures and thermoacoustic instabilities of centrally-staged swirl flames fueled with methane at atmospheric pressure by varying the stratification ratio and using different partially-premixed modes. Thermoacoustic instabilities are excited in the unstable cases with higher thermal power, and partial premixing in the main stage leads to stronger instabilities. Simplified thermoacoustic network analysis is conducted to provide insights into the nature of thermoacoustic instabilities in different flame structures.

High-speed simultaneous PLIF/PIV imaging of a lift-off swirling flame under acoustic forcing

Xunchen Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structure and dynamics of a lean-premixed swirling flame using various measurement techniques, revealing the stable and unstable states of swirling flames under different conditions and the transient transitions between these states. High repetition PLIF/PIV results demonstrate that the lifted flame can be re-attached with increasing equivalence ratio or forcing frequencies and amplitudes.

Experimental study of the effect of outlet boundary on combustion instabilities in premixed swirling flames

Yao Yang et al.

Summary: The study showed that combustion instabilities are closely related to both equivalence ratio and exit boundary. Different damping rings can trigger the quarter wave mode at specific intervals and suppress it at various levels. The outlet contraction affects both the frequency and amplitude of the thermoacoustic mode, influencing resonant frequency by modifying gas temperature and acoustic boundary.
