Spray characteristics of diesel, biodiesel, polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers blends and prediction of spray tip penetration using artificial neural network

Yu Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spray characteristics of biodiesel and polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODE) under different injection pressures. It was found that biodiesel blends have a greater spray tip penetration compared to diesel blends, and the addition of PODE brings the spray characteristics of biodiesel closer to pure diesel. An excellent predictive model was also developed using computer technology.

Gas-liquid mass transfer characterization in a thin shrinking film at an atomization nozzle

Axel Canado et al.

Summary: This paper applies a light absorption method to estimate the thickness of atomizing liquid film at microscale and determine the local profile of dioxygen concentration using a dioxygen sensitive dye. The method relies on the Beer-Lambert law and provides a dual measurement of thickness and mass transfer. It is the first successful implementation of this method in thin liquid films in sprays at microscale and with such high velocities.

Numerical investigation on the role of a mixer on spray impingement and mixing in channel cross-stream airflow

Palaniappan Venkatachalam et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the influence of introducing a spin-type mixer and different angular orientations of the mixer blades on the spray-wall interaction and mixing. The results show that the choice of the angular orientation of the mixer governs the extent of droplet deposition and splashing, as well as the spatial uniformity of droplets and ammonia species.

Computational fluid dynamics characterization of the hollow-cone atomization: Newtonian and non-Newtonian spray comparison

Massimiliano Di Martino et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the characterization of small-scale pressure-swirl spray under laminar flow conditions, and investigates the key parameters that modify the attributes of multiscale flow. Through computational fluid dynamics, the influence of main fluid/packaging parameters on spray properties and the atomization process is analyzed. The entire spray system is modeled by structuring the fragmentation process into multiple stages, linking key features of the hollow-cone spray process to spray pattern and droplet size distribution for both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid properties.

Numerical study of the effect of geometric parameters on the internal flow of a pressure nozzle for dustfall

Junpeng Wang et al.

Summary: Using CFD simulations, this study investigated the effect of main structural parameters on the internal flow of a pressure nozzle, finding that changes in convergent angle, outlet diameter, swirl angle, and flow area significantly impact velocity and swirl degree. Among these parameters, swirl angle and outlet diameter have the most significant influence on the velocity of the nozzle outlet.

Effect of spray modes on electrospray cooling heat transfer of ethanol

Haojie Xu et al.

Summary: The heat transfer performance of electrospray cooling has been experimentally investigated with different spray modes, showing that droplet size decreases and spray velocity increases with higher applied voltage. As the spray mode transitions to cone-jet/multi-jet modes, the nucleate boiling region is extended and the critical heat flux increases. Electrospray cooling significantly enhances cooling capacity by precise control under certain conditions.

Air swirl effect on spray characteristics and droplet dispersion in a twin-jet crossflow airblast injector

Shirin Patil et al.

Summary: The paper reports on spray characterization in a novel twin-jet airblast injector, focusing on the effect of injector air swirl on droplet characteristics and dispersion behavior. The addition of air swirl significantly affects spray topology and droplet size downstream of the injector exit, leading to improved atomization quality and high spray dispersion. The results provide insight into the physics behind the improved atomization due to air swirl and demonstrate the injector's ability to achieve atomization quality and high spray dispersion over a wide operating range.

Kiumars Khani Aminjan et al.

Summary: This study focuses on pressure-swirl atomizers with a spiral path, exploring the flow development under different pressure levels. Results show that increasing pressure leads to a larger spray cone angle and smaller droplet diameter. Additionally, increasing the cross-section and length of the spiral path results in thicker fluid film and larger droplet diameter with a reduced spray cone angle.
