Extended p3/2 Neutron Orbital and the N=32 Shell Closure in 52Ca

M. Enciu et al.

Summary: In this study, one-neutron knockout from 52Ca onto a proton target in inverse kinematics was performed. Prompt 7 spectroscopy was combined with the experiment at an energy of about 230 MeV/nucleon. The exclusive quasifree scattering cross sections to bound states in 51Ca and the momentum distributions corresponding to the removal of 1f7=2 and 2p3=2 neutrons were measured. The results indicate a shell closure at the neutron number N = 32 in Ca isotopes, similar to the shell closures at N = 28 and N = 34. Analysis of the momentum distributions reveals that the larger root-mean-square radius of the 2p3=2 orbital in neutron-rich Ca isotopes is responsible for the unexpected linear increase of the charge radius with the neutron number.

Probing Different Characteristics of Shell Evolution Driven by Central, Spin-Orbit, and Tensor Forces

Yutaka Utsuno

Summary: This paper investigates the validity of the shell-evolution picture on neutron-rich nuclei with atomic mass number 25 ≤ A ≤ 55 through shell-model calculations. The SDPF-MU interaction is used, with central, two-body spin-orbit, and tensor forces taken from Gaussian, M3Y, and pi+rho meson exchange forces, respectively. The results confirm the effectiveness of the present scheme in describing shell evolution in exotic nuclei.

In-beam γ-ray spectroscopy of 32Mg via direct reactions

N. Kitamura et al.

Summary: This study aims to extend the level scheme of 32Mg, provide spin-parity assignments to excited states, and discuss the microscopic structure of each state through comparisons with theoretical calculations. The experimental results revealed a significantly updated level scheme for 32Mg, with negative-parity intruder and positive-parity normal states, and were confronted with four different nuclear structure models. However, unexplained discrepancies remain, and the structure of this key nucleus is not yet fully captured even with state-of-the-art theoretical approaches.

Border of the island of inversion: Unbound states in 29Ne

M. Holl et al.

Summary: In this study, the unbound states of Ne-29 were investigated for the first time. Through analyzing resonance properties, partial cross sections, and momentum distributions, some important conclusions were drawn, including the first evidence for f(7/2) single particle strength in Ne-29.

Coexisting normal and intruder configurations in 32Mg

N. Kitamura et al.

Summary: Research on the Mg-32 nucleus, situated in the island of inversion, utilized two direct reaction probes with different sensitivities to explore its structure. The experiment provided an updated level scheme and structural information, revealing the coexistence of various structures in Mg-32. Further theoretical studies are needed to fully understand the complexity of this key nucleus.

Bound State Properties Studied by the Knockout Reaction

Kazuki Yoshida

Summary: The atomic nucleus, a quantum many-body system of protons and neutrons, can often be well described and understood through single-particle motion or clustering phenomena. Nucleon and cluster knockout reactions are important probes for studying these nuclear states, with the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) framework being a key theory in describing the knockout reaction. The DWIA framework has been applied to analyze nucleon knockout reactions from medium-mass neutron-rich nuclei, showing promising results and comparisons with other reaction theories.

Spectroscopy of 33Mg with knockout reactions

D. Bazin et al.

Summary: The structure of Mg-33 was investigated using knockout reactions, revealing the nature of excited states and resolving a long-standing controversy over the parity of the ground state. Configuration mixing in the complex nucleus located in the island of inversion plays a significant role in the results.
