Summary: For the classification of topological phases of matter, the consideration of whether a system is spinless or spinful is important. Recently, it has been theoretically realized that the algebraic structure of symmetries can be projectively represented in the presence of gauge symmetry, which enables the switch between spinless and spinful topological phases. In this study, spinful topological phases are experimentally demonstrated in spinless acoustic crystals with projective space-time inversion symmetry. This allows for the realization of a one-dimensional topologically gapped phase characterized by a 21 winding number, with double-degenerate bands in the entire Brillouin zone and two pairs of degenerate topological boundary modes.

Summary: In this Letter, a real space classification of Hofstadter phases is presented based on topological indices in terms of symmetry-protected real space invariants, revealing the bulk and boundary responses of fragile topological states to flux. It is found that the flux periodicity in tight-binding models causes the symmetries broken by the magnetic field to reenter at strong flux, forming projective point group representations. The reentrant projective point groups are completely classified, and the Schur multipliers that define them are found to be Aharonov-Bohm phases calculated along the bonds of the crystal. A nontrivial Schur multiplier is shown to be sufficient to predict and protect the Hofstadter response with only zero-flux topology.

Summary: The authors establish a unified theory of projective crystal symmetries with time-reversal invariance and construct models for all 458 projective symmetry algebras for the 17 two-dimensional wallpaper groups. They discover three physical signatures resulting from projective symmetry algebras, including the shift of high-symmetry momenta, an enforced nontrivial Zak phase, and a spinless eight-fold nodal point. This work offers a theoretical foundation for the field of artificial crystals and opens the door to a wealth of topological states and phenomena beyond the existing paradigms.

Summary: In the presence of gauge symmetry, this study demonstrates the construction of Mobius-twisted topological phases by exploiting projective translation symmetry. Two Mobius insulators, including a two-dimensional one with first-order band topology and a three-dimensional one with higher-order band topology, are realized experimentally in acoustic crystals for the first time. The peculiar Mobius edge and hinge states are observed unambiguously through real-space visualization, momentum-space spectroscopy, and phase-space winding analysis. This work not only provides a new avenue for artificial systems with the interplay between gauge and crystalline symmetries, but also establishes a new framework for topological physics based on projective symmetry.

Summary: The emergence of nonsymmorphic chiral symmetries in the Hofstadter model is theoretically studied, which are introduced through synthetic symmetries in synthetic gauge fields. Depending on the values of the gauge fields, the nonsymmorphic chiral symmetries can exhibit non-Abelian algebra and protect fourfold degeneracy at all momenta. Moreover, the parity of the system size can determine whether the resulting insulating phase is trivial or topological.

Summary: The study reveals the possibility of switching the two fundamental classes via Z(2) projective representations, allowing for unique topological phases to be achieved in different classes. For PT symmetry, the occurrence of this switching mechanism is demonstrated when P inverses the gauge transformation required to recover the original Z(2) gauge connections under P.
