Search for Dark Matter Particle Interactions with Electron Final States with DarkSide-50

P. Agnes et al.

Summary: We conducted a search for dark matter particles with sub-GeV/c2 masses that interact with electrons as final state particles using data from the DarkSide-50 experiment, which was based on low-radioactivity liquid argon exposure. Through analysis of the ionization signals, we were able to exclude previously unexplored parameter space for dark matter-electron interaction, including the cross section sigma over bar e, the axioelectric coupling constant gAe, and the dark photon kinetic mixing parameter kappa. Additionally, we established the first direct-detection constraints on the mixing angle IUe412 for keV/c2 sterile neutrinos.

Search for low-mass dark matter WIMPs with 12 ton-day exposure of DarkSide-50

P. Agnes et al.

Summary: In this study, the DarkSide-50 experiment at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso analyzed the complete dataset acquired with a low-radioactivity argon target to search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) in the mass range below 10 GeV/c². The new analysis improved the calibration of the detector response, background model, and determination of systematic uncertainties, allowing for a more accurate modeling of background rate and spectra down to 0.06 keVr. By setting a 90% C.L. exclusion limit for the spin-independent cross section of WIMPs with a mass of 3 GeV/c² on nucleons at 6 x 10-43 cm², this study extends the exclusion region for spin-independent dark matter interactions below the current experimental constraints in the [1.2, 3.6] GeV/c² WIMP mass range.

Direct detection of spin-dependent sub-GeV dark matter via Migdal effect

Wenyu Wang et al.

Summary: Motivated by the constraints on spin-independent dark matter (DM)-nucleus scattering, this study investigates the spin-dependent interactions of light Majorana DM with nuclei mediated by an axial-vector boson. The exclusion limits on spin-dependent DM-nucleus scattering are derived using existing ionization data, with a lower limit on DM mass reaching several MeVs. The presence of a light mediator weakens the bounds on spin-dependent DM-nucleus scattering cross sections compared to a heavy mediator.

Accelerating composite dark matter discovery with nuclear recoils and the Migdal effect

Javier F. Acevedo et al.

Summary: This study shows that large composite dark matter states source a scalar binding field, which, coupled to Standard Model nucleons, causes nuclei to recoil and accelerate. Detectable at dark matter experiments, these dynamics are most sensitive when considering the Migdal effect. Additionally, type-Ia supernovae and planetary heating are explored as potential means to discover this type of dark matter.

Low-mass inelastic dark matter direct detection via the Migdal effect

Nicole F. Bell et al.

Summary: The study examines inelastic scattering of low-mass dark matter using the Migdal effect at direct detection experiments, revealing degeneracies between dark matter mass and mass splitting that are challenging to overcome. Utilizing XENON1T data, constraints are placed on an unexplored region of the inelastic dark matter parameter space. For exothermic scattering, the Migdal effect enables xenon-based detectors to detect dark matter with O(MeV) mass, surpassing the sensitivity achievable with nuclear recoils alone.

Calibration of the liquid argon ionization response to low energy electronic and nuclear recoils with DarkSide-50

P. Agnes et al.

Summary: DarkSide-50 has shown the high potential of dual-phase liquid argon time projection chambers in exploring WIMP interactions in the GeV/c(2) mass range, detecting recoil energies down to the sub-keV range. The ionization yield of electronic recoils down to about 180 eV was measured, while a model-dependent determination of the ionization response to nuclear recoils down to around 500 eV was achieved, the lowest ever in liquid argon. Neutron calibration sources and external datasets from neutron beam experiments were used in the research.
