LAMMPS-a flexible simulation tool for particle-based materials modeling at the atomic, meso, and continuum scales

Aidan P. Thompson et al.

Summary: LAMMPS, a classical molecular dynamics simulator released as an open source code in 2004, has gained popularity for its wide variety of particle interaction models, platform compatibility, and user control over simulation details. With contributions from numerous developers, it has grown from 50,000 lines of code to a million today, showcasing new capabilities like dynamic load balancing and quantum-accuracy machine learning interatomic potentials.

The role of intramolecular relaxations on the structure and stability of vapor-deposited glasses

Aixi Zhang et al.

Summary: Through experiments and simulations, we found that even a small change in the rotation barrier of a single bond in isomeric molecules can strongly influence the structure and stability of PVD glasses formed through surface-mediated equilibration. Flexible molecules have higher mobility at high temperatures, leading to the formation of isotropic stable glasses, while rigid molecules have poorer packing and can form stable glasses with layered structures at low temperatures. The dynamics of flexible molecules couple more efficiently to the glass layers, resulting in reduced mobility and unstable glasses.
