Universality for black hole heat engines near critical points

Maria C. DiMarco et al.

Summary: Johnson has shown that a black hole heat engine can approach the Carnot efficiency near a critical point, while still maintaining finite power. We have expanded on this result and demonstrated how the rate of approaching the Carnot efficiency is determined by the critical exponents. We have applied these findings to different types of black holes and provided evidence for the impossibility of even-order Lovelock black holes with isolated critical points.

Holographic complexity of quantum black holes

Roberto Emparan et al.

Summary: This study analyzes different holographic complexity proposals for black holes, considering corrections from bulk quantum fields. By focusing on the quantum BTZ black hole, the analysis accounts for the effects of conformal fields with large central charge and backreaction corrections to the BTZ metric. The results indicate that Volume Complexity exhibits a consistent quantum expansion and accurately reproduces known limits, while the Generalized Action Complexity fails to reproduce the expected classical limit due to large contributions from the singularity modified by quantum backreaction. Moreover, the doubly-holographic setup enables the computation of complexity purely from quantum fields, a concept that has been challenging in conventional holographic setups. In holographic induced-gravity scenarios, the complexity of quantum fields in a black hole background vanishes to leading order in the gravitational strength of CFT effects.

Black hole chemistry, the cosmological constant and the embedding tensor

Patrick Meessen et al.

Summary: This article investigates the thermodynamics of black holes in theories that include dimensionful constants. The author introduces a natural way to handle these constants by promoting them to scalar fields and utilizing (d - 1)-form Lagrange multipliers. The article also explores the role of embedding tensors in the Smarr formula and establishes an interesting connection between black-hole thermodynamics, gaugings, and compactifications in the context of superstring/supergravity theories.

Black holes in dS3

Roberto Emparan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the generation and thermodynamic properties of quantum black holes in three-dimensional de Sitter space, using both braneworld holography and non-holographic perturbative analysis. The results reveal similarities to classical four-dimensional black holes and provide insights into the holographic dual description of de Sitter spacetimes.

Quasi-local energy and microcanonical entropy in two-dimensional nearly de Sitter gravity

Andrew Svesko et al.

Summary: This paper studies the semi-classical thermodynamics of two-dimensional de Sitter space in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity, coupled with conformal matter. The study derives the quasi-local energy and the generalized entropy by introducing a timelike boundary in the static patch. The findings provide a first principles derivation of the island rule for U(1) symmetric dS(2) backgrounds.

Holographic CFT phase transitions and criticality for charged AdS black holes

Wan Cong et al.

Summary: We study the holographic dual of the extended thermodynamics of spherically symmetric, charged AdS black holes in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We argue that the CFT description of charged AdS black holes contains critical phenomena or interesting phase behaviour. We also discover a new zeroth-order phase transition in the fixed parameter condition.

Double holography in string theory

Andreas Karch et al.

Summary: We develop the notion of double holography in Type IIB string theory realizations of braneworld models. Based on the concrete BCFTs and their brane construction, we provide microscopic realizations of the intermediate holographic description. By discussing the causal structures in the full BCFT duals and intermediate descriptions, we confirm qualitative features found in the bottom-up models but also suggest a refinement of their interpretation.

Higher-curvature gravities from braneworlds and the holographic c-theorem

Pablo Bueno et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the structure of higher-curvature gravitational densities induced from holographic renormalization in AdS(d+1) and their definition of a higher-curvature gravitational theory on the brane in a braneworld construction. It is found that these densities satisfy a holographic c-theorem in general dimensions and the terms affecting the monotonicity of the holographic c-function are algebraic in curvature and do not involve covariant derivatives of the Riemann tensor.

Holographic thermodynamics requires a chemical potential for color

Manus R. Visser

Summary: The thermodynamic Euler equation for high-energy states of large-N gauge theories is derived in this study. It is shown that this equation is dual to the generalized Smarr formula for black holes in the presence of a negative cosmological constant. Additionally, the fundamental variational equation of thermodynamics is matched to the first law of black hole mechanics, including variations of the cosmological constant and Newton's constant.

Semi-classical thermodynamics of quantum extremal surfaces in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity

Juan F. Pedraza et al.

Summary: The study investigates the thermodynamic properties of Quantum Extremal Surfaces (QES) in the semi-classical JT gravity, showing that the Wald entropy fully encapsulates the generalized entropy and deriving the first law of nested Rindler wedge thermodynamics. In the microcanonical ensemble, the semi-classical first law implies the QES's generalized entropy is stationary at fixed energy, suggesting an equivalence between the thermodynamics of the nested Rindler wedge and QES.

Accelerating black hole thermodynamics with boost time

Adam Ball et al.

Summary: This study examines the thermodynamic first law for the electrically charged C-metric with vanishing cosmological constant, focusing on the relationship between accelerating black holes and cosmic strings. The Noetherian methods were used to derive the first law, and the recovery of the Reissner-Nordstrom first law in the limit of small string tension was demonstrated. Additionally, the action of the Euclidean section of the C-metric was computed and shown to agree with the thermodynamic grand potential, confirming the validity of the first law.

Thermodynamics of AdS Black Holes: Critical Behavior of the Central Charge

Wan Cong et al.

Summary: We reconsider the thermodynamics of anti-de Sitter black holes in the context of gauge-gravity duality, rewriting the first law in a new form containing both thermodynamic pressure and the central charge C of the dual conformal field theory and their conjugate variables. The obtained novel thermodynamic volume leads to a new understanding of the Van der Waals behavior of charged anti-de Sitter black holes, with phase changes governed by the degrees of freedom in the conformal field theory. The new criticality is universal and directly relates to the thermodynamics of the dual field theory and its central charge, unlike the old P-V criticality.
