Changes in the properties of membrane tethers in response to HP1α depletion in MCF7 cells

Susav Pradhan et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanical properties of HP1 alpha-depleted MCF7 breast cancer cells were explored by pulling membrane tethers using optical tweezers in comparison to controls. The results showed significant differences in membrane tension and mechanical properties between HP1 alpha-depleted breast cancer cells and their matched controls.

Membrane ruffling is a mechanosensor of extracellular fluid viscosity

Matthew Pittman et al.

Summary: Cell behaviour is influenced by the physical forces and mechanical properties of both cells and their microenvironment. This study explores the effect of viscosity, an important component of the cellular microenvironment, on cell behaviour. The results show that cells respond in a similar manner to elevated viscosity, with increased spread area, focal adhesion formation and turnover, traction forces, and migration speed. Cells utilize membrane ruffling to sense changes in extracellular fluid viscosity and trigger adaptive responses.

Membrane Homeostasis: The Role of Actin Cytoskeleton

Arikta Biswas et al.

Summary: This review discusses how the establishment and maintenance of the homeostatic state of the membrane is primarily contributed by the actin cytoskeleton. Research shows that actin polymerization forces, myosin-II based contractile forces, and ezrin-mediated attachment each have distinct effects on membrane tension. The dynamics of the cytoskeleton determine whether the steady-state tension in cells is uniform, has front-rear gradients, or exhibits temporally varying profiles.

Realization of pitch-rotational torque wrench in two-beam optical tweezers

Muruga Lokesh et al.

Summary: Rotational motion in spherical particles has been achieved by manipulating laser spots in holographic optical tweezers. By trapping birefringent particles in two beams and adjusting the depth of one beam's focus, a controllable pitch rotational torque-wrench is generated to prevent free spinning of the particle. The rotation is detected using a new pitch motion detection technique and controlled torques are applied.

Estimation of rolling work of adhesion at the nanoscale with soft probing using optical tweezers

Muruga Lokesh et al.

Summary: This study explores the adhesion work at the nanoscale using atomic force microscopes and optical tweezers techniques. By employing soft probing methods, the work of adhesion for different surface materials can be obtained, showing significantly lower values compared to hard probing methods.
