Tribenuron-methyl-resistant Descurainia sophia L. exhibits negative cross-resistance to imazethapyr conferred by a Pro197Ser mutation in acetolactate synthase and reduced metabolism

Yufang Xu et al.

Summary: The TR D. sophia population with the Pro197Ser mutation displayed negative cross-resistance to imazethapyr, likely due to reduced metabolism and increased sensitivity of ALS to imazethapyr.

A122S, A205V, D376E, W574L and S653N substitutions in acetolactate synthase (ALS) from Amaranthus palmeri show different functional impacts on herbicide resistance

Valeria E. Palmieri et al.

Summary: This study compared various mutations of the Amaranthus palmeri ALS gene in vitro and found that certain mutations led to a decrease in catalytic efficiency and resistance to herbicides. The A122S mutation provided cross-resistance to different families of ALS inhibitors.

Cyhalofop-butyl resistance conferred by a novel Trp-2027-Leu mutation of acetyl-CoA carboxylase and enhanced metabolism in Leptochloa chinensis

Ning Zhao et al.

Summary: The study identified a case of an arable weed species, Chinese sprangletop (Leptochloa chinensis), exhibiting high resistance to cyhalofop-butyl and cross-resistance to other herbicides. Pre-treatment of resistant plants with piperonyl butoxide and 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzoxadiazole significantly reversed their resistance to cyhalofop-butyl. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis showed that the resistant plants metabolized cyhalofop-butyl faster than susceptible plants.

CYP81A68 confers metabolic resistance to ALS and ACCase-inhibiting herbicides and its epigenetic regulation in Echinochloa crus-galli

Lang Pan et al.

Summary: Long-term and excessive herbicide use has led to the evolution of herbicide resistance in weeds. This study confirmed the resistance of a global weed population, Echinochloa crus-galli, to ALS-inhibiting herbicide penoxsulam and ACCase-inhibiting herbicides cyhalofop-butyl and metamifop. The resistance was found to be due to the higher expression of a cytochrome P450 gene, CYP81A68, and enhanced metabolism via O-demethylation. Epigenetic regulation, specifically differential methylation of CpG islands, was also observed between resistant and susceptible populations. This research highlights the importance of alternative herbicide selection and nonchemical control tactics in reducing environmental impacts.

A novel Phe-206-Leu mutation in acetolactate synthase confers resistance to penoxsulam in barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv)

Jiapeng Fang et al.

Summary: This study identified a novel mutation Phe-206-Leu in the ALS gene that confers penoxsulam resistance in barnyardgrass. The mutation was found to weaken the interaction between penoxsulam and ALS binding, resulting in reduced sensitivity to the herbicide. This discovery provides important insights into the mechanisms of herbicide resistance in weeds.

Development and molecular analysis of a novel acetohydroxyacid synthase rapeseed mutant with high resistance to sulfonylurea herbicides

Yue Guo et al.

Summary: With the increasing promotion of simplified rapeseed cultivation, the development of cultivars with high resistance to herbicides is urgently needed. In this study, a novel mutant DS3 with high sulfonylurea resistance was obtained through ethyl methane sulfonate mutagenesis. The mutant harbored two mutations in the acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS) genes and showed a synergistic effect that greatly increased herbicide resistance.

Can new herbicide discovery allow weed management to outpace resistance evolution?

Todd A. Gaines et al.

Summary: Herbicides are effective in weed management, but the evolution of multiple herbicide resistance poses a threat to crop yield and profitability. Monitoring and diagnostics for resistance, along with innovation in herbicide discovery, are critical to combat this issue, as well as making changes in the patterns of herbicide use to slow down the selection pressure for resistance.

Design, synthesis and antifungal/anti-oomycete activity of pyrazolyl oxime ethers as novel potential succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors

Minlong Wang et al.

Summary: Innovative pyrazolyl oxime ethers were designed to discover SDHI compounds with a novel bridge, showing substantial differences in biological activities between Z- and E-isomers against fungi and oomycetes. These novel compounds have the potential for future SDHI development, and the strategy of replacing an amide bond with oxime ether may provide an alternative option in SDHI fungicide discovery.

Effects of a novel combination of two mutated acetolactate synthase (ALS) isozymes on resistance to ALS-inhibiting herbicides in flixweed (Descurainia sophia)

Yufang Xu et al.

Summary: Flixweed, a notorious broadleaf weed in winter wheat-growing areas of China, has evolved resistance to tribenuron-methyl up to 10,836.3-fold. The resistance is mainly due to target-site resistance mutations in ALS genes, with differential contributions from mutated ALS isozymes and differential expression levels of ALS genes in resistant versus susceptible plants. This research provides a new perspective for weed resistance management.

Gene expression shapes the patterns of parallel evolution of herbicide resistance in the agricultural weed Monochoria vaginalis

Shinji Tanigaki et al.

Summary: The evolution of herbicide resistance in weeds, specifically in M. vaginalis, is influenced by the differential gene expression of ALS genes, with MvALS1 and MvALS3 being more prominently expressed, driving biased representation of genes during the evolution of herbicide resistance.
