Microbe-oriented nanoparticles as phytomedicines for plant health management: An emerging paradigm to achieve global food security

Muhammad Noman et al.

Summary: Biotic and abiotic stresses impact agricultural production and quality globally. Traditional preventive measures with toxic chemicals are problematic due to ecotoxicological challenges. Engineered nanoparticles (NPs) are gaining attention as they possess unique physical and chemical properties that can help plants combat environmental stresses. However, concerns about NP toxicity have arisen. Biogenic NPs (bio-NPs) have garnered interest in agriculture due to their diverse biocompatibility, better efficacy, and eco-friendly nature compared to recalcitrant NPs. They provide a promising strategy for increased crop protection against biotic and abiotic stresses, ultimately ensuring global food security.

Study on spoilage potential and its molecular basis of Shewanella putrefaciens in response to cold conditions by Label-free quantitative proteomic analysis

Yun-Fang Qian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the survival and spoilage production of Shewanella putrefaciens in response to cold conditions. The metabolic and protease activity of the bacteria cultured at different temperatures were analyzed. The results showed that the lag phase of the strain cultured at low temperatures was significantly longer than at higher temperatures, and the accumulation of spoilage products also required more time. However, the protease activity and yield factors of the strain at low temperatures recovered in the later stages of the log phase. Proteomic analysis demonstrated the complex biological network of cold stress response and degradation pathways that might contribute to the spoilage potential of S. putrefaciens.

Transcriptomic and Proteomic Analysis of Gardnerella vaginalis Responding to Acidic pH and Hydrogen Peroxide Stress

Kundi Zhang et al.

Summary: Gardnerella vaginalis is the main pathogen causing bacterial vaginosis. In a healthy vaginal microecological environment, lactobacilli produce lactate and hydrogen peroxide to inhibit the growth of G. vaginalis. This study simulated the co-culture of lactobacilli and G. vaginalis by adding lactate and hydrogen peroxide to a G. vaginalis culture medium, and identified the stress response genes of G. vaginalis using transcriptomics and proteomics. The findings suggest potential new drug targets for G. vaginalis and the development of novel therapies for bacterial vaginosis.

Bioengineered chitosan-iron nanocomposite controls bacterial leaf blight disease by modulating plant defense response and nutritional status of rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Temoor Ahmed et al.

Summary: This study investigated the antibacterial activity of chitosan-iron nanocomposites (BNCs) against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) and their impact on the endophytic microbiome of rice. The results showed that BNCs effectively inhibited the growth and activity of the pathogen, reduced the disease incidence, and improved photosynthesis efficiency and nutritional profile of rice plants. Furthermore, BNCs enhanced the plant's disease resistance response and altered the bacterial community composition of rice. Overall, BNCs have the potential to be a non-toxic, sustainable, and highly efficient alternative for plant disease management.

Proteomic Analysis Unravels Response and Antioxidation Defense Mechanism of Rice Plants to Copper Oxide Nanoparticles: Comparison with Bulk Particles and Dissolved Cu Ions

Cheng Peng et al.

Summary: The increasing use of nanomaterials in agriculture poses environmental risks, but the impact of nanomaterials on plant proteins is still not well understood. This study investigated the effects of CuO nanoparticles (NPs), CuO bulk particles (BPs), and dissolved Cu ions on rice seedlings. The results showed that CuO NPs had greater Cu accumulation, higher ascorbate peroxidase activity, and altered protein expression compared to BPs and Cu ions. Specifically, proteins related to C2 domain, glutathione S-transferase, drug metabolism, ion transport, oxidative phosphorylation, and phagosome pathways were significantly affected by NPs. This proteomic analysis suggests that CuO NPs caused higher phytotoxicity and activated defense responses in rice seedlings.
