Associations of perfluoroalkyl substances with adipocytokines in umbilical cord serum: A mixtures approach

Jiayun Ding et al.

Summary: This study found significant associations between in utero PFAS levels and adipocytokine concentrations, suggesting that exposure to a mixture of PFAS during pregnancy may lead to decreased fetal leptin levels but increased adiponectin levels, with potential sex-specific effects.

Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure through infant feeding in early life

Inge A. L. P. Van Beijsterveldt et al.

Summary: The study found that levels of PFOA and PFOS in human milk decreased in the first 3 months after birth, and these substances were not detected in formula feeding. Infants who were exclusively breastfed had the highest daily PFAS intake, which was strongly correlated with the infant's plasma levels of PFAS.

Early-life exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances in relation to serum adipokines in a longitudinal birth cohort

Yu-Hsuan Shih et al.

Summary: This study found significant associations between PFAS concentrations at 18 months, 5 years, and 9 years, and levels of leptin, leptin receptor, and resistin in children at age 9. There was limited evidence of a modification effect of sex on serum PFAS concentrations. The Bayesian kernel machine regression results consistently suggested significant effects of PFAS mixtures at 18 months, 5 years, and 9 years on adipokine concentrations at 9 years.

Gestational and childhood exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and cardiometabolic risk at age 12 years

Nan Li et al.

Summary: The study revealed that children with higher gestational exposure to PFOA and PFHxS were associated with unfavorable cardiometabolic risk in adolescence, primarily driven by insulin resistance and adiponectin to leptin ratio. Other individual cardiometabolic risk factors associated with gestational PFOA included insulin and waist circumference.

Is resistin the master link between inflammation and inflammation-related chronic diseases?

Mohammed Taouis et al.

Summary: Resistin was initially discovered in mice and was found to be related to obesity and insulin resistance as a hormone secreted by adipose tissue. In humans, Resistin is expressed by immune cells, especially macrophages, and is associated with inflammatory responses. Although in mice there is evidence linking Resistin to obesity and insulin resistance, in humans the association is still debated and requires more epidemiological studies. Resistin has also been linked to other chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and cancers and has been considered as a biological marker in many studies.
