Post-operative Outcomes for Vascular Rings: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Joao Rato et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis investigated the morbidity and mortality associated with surgical correction of vascular rings and found that while the surgery is safe, there is a high rate of persistent post-operative symptoms.

Influence of Fetal Diagnosis on Management of Vascular Rings

Elizabeth H. Stephens et al.

Summary: This study compared the management strategies and outcomes of infants with fetal diagnosis and postnatal diagnosis of vascular rings. It found that the frequency of fetal diagnoses has been increasing in recent years. Patients with a fetal diagnosis underwent surgery at a significantly younger age. There was no significant difference in postoperative complications or length of stay between fetal and postnatal diagnoses. Fetal diagnosis allows for expectant management and early intervention without increased morbidity.

Contemporary surgical outcome and symptomatic relief following vascular ring surgery in children: effect of prenatal diagnosis

Parinita Swarnkar et al.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the postoperative complications and outcomes in children with isolated double aortic arch or right aortic arch with left arterial ligament and assess the impact of fetal diagnosis on outcomes. The most common complication was vocal cord palsy, and older age at surgery was the only predictor for postoperative complications. Prenatal diagnosis was associated with a lower rate of postoperative symptoms.

Fetal echocardiographic markers to differentiate between a right and double aortic arch

Milou P. M. Van Poppel et al.

Summary: The study aimed to describe the fetal echocardiographic features of a double aortic arch and evaluate their performance in differentiating between different types of aortic arch abnormalities. The results showed that the Z configuration was a useful marker for distinguishing between right aortic arch with left duct and double aortic arch.

Prenatal incidence of isolated right aortic arch and double aortic arch

Trisha V. Vigneswaran et al.

Summary: The study found that the incidence of isolated right aortic arch (RAA) and double aortic arch (DAA) in fetuses undergoing routine first-trimester ultrasound examination in a local population is 2-3 times higher than that reported in postnatal studies. Additionally, the risk for these abnormalities is substantially increased in fetuses conceived by in vitro fertilization (IVF), with a significantly higher median maternal age in the group with isolated RAA or DAA.

Right aortic arch forming a true vascular ring: a clinical review

Daniel Biermann et al.

Summary: Surgical management of a right aortic arch forming a complete vascular ring around the oesophagus and trachea generally provides symptomatic relief, with most patients experiencing full resolution of symptoms within months to years postoperatively, although some may require reintervention.

Postnatal impact of a prenatally diagnosed double aortic arch

Trisha V. Vigneswaran et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed consecutive cases seen at two fetal cardiology units from 2014 to 2019, finding that prenatal diagnosis of double aortic arch (DAA) may lead to postnatal symptoms of airway compression, with significant tracheal compression present regardless of morphology type.
