Prevalence, Characteristics, and Determinants of Suboptimal Care in the Initial Management of Community-Onset Severe Bacterial Infections in Children

Fleur Lorton et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the prevalence, characteristics, and determinants of suboptimal care in the initial management of community-onset severe bacterial infections (COSBIs) among children. The study found that suboptimal care was common in these cases and was associated with severe sequelae. Interestingly, there was a contradictory association between suboptimal care and reduced risk of death.

Delayed Administration of Antibiotics Beyond the First Hour of Recognition Is Associated with Increased Mortality Rates in Children with Sepsis/Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock

Jhuma Sankar et al.

Summary: Delayed administration of antibiotics beyond 1 hour of recognition was associated with higher mortality rates in children with sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock. Early administration of antibiotics within the first hour is recommended to improve clinical outcomes.

Distinguishing bacterial versus non-bacterial causes of febrile illness - A systematic review of host biomarkers

B. Leticia Fernandez-Carballo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate host biomarkers that can distinguish bacterial from non-bacterial causes of AFI, finding that most studies focused on protein, hematology, RNA, and metabolite biomarkers. Results showed a high overall risk of bias for most biomarkers, but some showed good sensitivity/specificity in blood samples. Most of the well-performing biomarkers identified are well-known, with a few new biomarkers showing promise, but further high-quality studies are needed to confirm these findings.
