Prediction of Prostate Cancer Biochemical and Clinical Recurrence Is Improved by IHC-Assisted Grading Using Appl1, Sortilin and Syndecan-1

Jessica M. Logan et al.

Summary: A novel biomarker panel (Appl1, Sortilin and Syndecan-1) was found to be a strong independent predictor for both clinical and biochemical recurrence outcomes, with higher prediction performance than traditional grading. The study also found that biomarker-assisted assessment had better predictive performance for evaluating the risk of biochemical recurrence and clinical recurrence in patients with prostate cancer.

Cribriform Patterned Lesions in the Prostate Gland with Emphasis on Differential Diagnosis and Clinical Significance

Maria Destouni et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the morphologic features and clinical significance of entities with a cribriform morphology within the prostate gland, aiming to assist pathologists with challenging cases and inform clinicians about the clinical implications of cribriform morphology.

Aberrant protein expression of Appl1, Sortilin and Syndecan-1 during the biological progression of prostate cancer

Carmela Martini et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop biomarkers that accurately define the biology of prostate cancer and improve the interpretation of pathology for accurate grading. By examining the protein expression of key genes in the prostate cancer pathway, the utility of a biomarker panel was evaluated and found to reduce subjectivity and improve the reliability of pathology assessment.

The 2019 Genitourinary Pathology Society (GUPS) White Paper on Contemporary Grading of Prostate Cancer

Jonathan Epstein et al.

Summary: Controversies and uncertainty persist in prostate cancer grading. Recommendations include reporting percentage Gleason pattern 4 (%GP4) in needle biopsies, updating tertiary grade patterns, and providing global scores in MRI-targeted biopsies.

Head to head: should the intraductal component of invasive prostate cancer be graded?

Murali Varma et al.

Summary: The reporting of intraductal carcinoma of the prostate (IDCP) is controversial, with conflicting recommendations from the International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) and the Genitourinary Pathology Society (GUPS). ISUP suggests incorporating the IDCP component of invasive prostate cancer in the Gleason score, while GUPS recommends reporting IDCP independently of the Gleason score. Arguments for and against this practice are discussed in detail.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Intraductal Carcinoma of the Prostate Extreme Nuclear Size Is Not a Diagnostic Parameter

Hemamali Samaratunga et al.

Summary: IDCP, a type of high-grade prostatic adenocarcinoma, shows significant nuclear size differences compared to benign luminal cells, but does not fully meet the WHO criteria for >= 6x nuclear enlargement. Rare large nuclei in IDCP exhibit even greater differences in nuclear size parameters compared to benign nuclei. Reliance on nuclear size criteria may lead to underdiagnosis of IDCP.
