Low host specificity of Hippobosca equina infestation in different domestic animals and pigeon

Soliman M. Soliman et al.

Summary: This study emphasizes the low host specificity of Hippobosca equina in transmitting diseases between different animal species. Flies were collected and identified using light microscope and molecular characterization. The highest prevalence of H. equina was observed from mid-June to the end of August. Insect infestation control using fipronil and deltamethrin showed successful results in the field.

Trypanosomes of the Trypanosoma theileri Group: Phylogeny and New Potential Vectors

Anna Brotankova et al.

Summary: This study investigated the vector specificity of T. theileri trypanosomes belonging to Trypanosoma theileri group in different dipteran vectors. Aedes mosquitoes were found to be the main vectors, but keds and blackflies were also reported as potential vectors. The study also revealed differences in vectorial capacity among different lineages of T. theileri trypanosomes.

Summary: The study revealed varying prevalence of Bartonella in moose and red deer in Norway, with Bartonella also detected in ticks and biting midges. Moose may serve as a reservoir for Bartonella. This study marks the first report of Bartonella genus in ticks from Fennoscandia and Culicoides worldwide.

Molecular Detection of Selected Pathogens with Zoonotic Potential in Deer Keds (Lipoptena fortisetosa)

Remigiusz Galecki et al.

Summary: This passage discusses the characteristics of deer keds as parasites and their potential role in the transmission of pathogens. Research suggests that deer keds may be potential vectors of several pathogens and can be used as biological markers for investigating the prevalence of vector-borne diseases in free-ranging cervid populations. Further extensive investigations are needed to confirm this potential role.

Autochthonous Trypanosoma spp. in European Mammals: A Brief Journey amongst the Neglected Trypanosomes

Alice Magri et al.

Summary: The genus Trypanosoma includes flagellated protozoa that can infect humans and animals, causing diseases like Chagas disease in the Americas and human African trypanosomiasis. In Europe, the presence of Trypanosoma species is mainly linked to travel history of human patients or introduction of infected animals. The epidemiological status of trypanosomes infecting mammals in Europe is not well understood.

Promiscuous specialists: Host specificity patterns among generalist louse flies

Aleksi Lehikoinen et al.

Summary: Ectoparasites such as louse flies show tendencies for host specialization driven by host biology and competition avoidance, but certain bird-specific louse fly species exhibit a wide range of suitable hosts. Factors such as host size, habitat, and breeding strategy influence host preference among bird louse fly species. DNA barcodes for Finnish Hippoboscidae species are provided as a resource for future species identification and metabarcoding studies.

Summary: Free-ranging wild ungulates in central Austria were found to host Babesia and Anaplasma phagocytophilum, transmitted by ticks, with potential prevalence impacted by climate change. Further long-term testing is recommended to assess the impact of climate change on blood parasite prevalence in central Austria.

Summary: The study found the presence of Trypanosoma spp., Bartonella spp., and Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. in sheep ked collected from sheep in Poland. Co-infection by Trypanosoma spp. and Bartonella spp. was detected in 50.39% of the studied insects. Further studies are needed to determine the potential role of sheep ked as a vector for these pathogens.
