Two almost-forgotten Trypanites ichnospecies names for the most common Palaeozoic macroboring

Dirk Knaust et al.

Summary: Trypanites is a common macroboring found globally throughout the Phanerozoic, and it is used to identify discontinuity and hiatal surfaces on carbonate hardgrounds. There are four valid species of Trypanites, with an additional frequently reported form that occurs in lithic and skeletal hard substrates in Ordovician and Silurian carbonates. A review of old literature reveals that two previously introduced ichnospecies of Trypanites, T. sozialis and T. keilaensis, were forgotten names. Morphometric analysis shows a gradational transition between these two ichnospecies, suggesting that T. sozialis is the senior synonym of T. keilaensis. This study also provides a description and illustrations of additional material from Ordovician and Silurian carbonates to demonstrate the morphological and morphometric variation of this important bioerosion trace fossil. A lectotype of the type ichnospecies, T. weisei, is selected for interspecies comparison. Trypanites sozialis is a common boring in Cambrian to Devonian hardgrounds, distributed on the palaeocontinents of Baltica, Laurentia, and Gondwana.

Diverse endobiotic symbiont fauna from the late Katian (Late Ordovician) of Estonia

Olev Vinn et al.

Summary: Symbiotic associations between endobiotic cornulitids and tabulate corals and stromatoporoids in the Katian (Late Ordovician) of Estonia were studied. The cornulitids benefited from the stable substrate and additional protection provided by the hosts' skeletons. This study also reported symbiotic lingulates and Chaetosalpinx-like bioclaustration structures found in bryozoans for the first time. The most diverse fauna of endobionts was hosted by bryozoans in the Katian of Baltica, while corals and stromatoporoids hosted fewer groups of endobionts.

The palaeogeographical impact on the biodiversity of marine faunas during the Ordovician radiations

David A. T. Harper et al.

Summary: Diversification is a key property of life, with research on biodiversity trajectories based on data availability and analytical methods. Regional datasets exploring key fossil groups reveal distinctive biodiversity signals associated with low-latitude settings but also highlight significant gaps in knowledge.

The Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event (GOBE) is not a single event

Thomas Servais et al.

Summary: The Ordovician biodiversification is considered one of the most significant radiations in the marine ecosystems of the entire Phanerozoic, known as the "Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event" (GOBE). Based on different palaeontological datasets, the Ordovician radiation has been interpreted to occur at different times in different places, likely related to the palaeogeography of the Ordovician.

Timing and patterns of the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event and Late Ordovician mass extinction: Perspectives from South China

Yiying Deng et al.

Summary: The study utilized high-resolution chronostratigraphy to reveal two major biological events in the early Paleozoic era: GOBE and LOME. GOBE started in the early Ordovician and ended at the Darriwilian boundary, consisting of two major radiation phases; while the Late Ordovician witnessed two extinction events resulting in a regional species loss of approximately 67%.
