Potassium incorporation and isotope fractionation in cultured scleractinian corals

Wenshuai Li et al.

Summary: Potassium participates in coral biological activities and its isotope fractionation is important for interpreting coral records. This study evaluates the distribution and variation of potassium isotopes in the skeleton of corals and identifies the influence of biotic and abiotic controls on potassium partitioning and isotope fractionation. The findings highlight the role of physiological modulation in the phase distribution of potassium in coral skeletons and its isotopic variation.

A half-century record of coral skeletal P/Ca reveals late 20th century nutrient pollution in Port Dickson, Malaysia

Mengli Chen et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic nutrient pollution poses a significant threat to coastal ecosystems, but the lack of long-term nutrient records hinders our understanding of its extent and ecological impacts. This study reconstructed a 50-year seawater phosphate record at Port Dickson, Malaysia using coral skeletal phosphorus analysis, revealing a substantial increase in coral P/Ca ratio and a decrease in skeletal density, suggesting the potential impact of phosphate enrichment on reefbuilding corals. The findings emphasize the ongoing need for environmental management upstream of coastal zones, considering the importance of agriculture and coral reef reliance in Southeast Asia.

Potassium phases and isotopic composition in modern marine biogenic carbonates

Wenshuai Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated isotope fractionation between biogenic carbonates and modern seawater by measuring K concentration, phase, and isotopic composition in calcified skeletons from various calcifying species. Deep-sea corals showed the largest isotopic variability while the K isotopic composition of marine biogenic carbonates is not strongly temperature-dependent but correlates with skeletal K phases.

Phase-Field Modeling of Biomineralization in Mollusks and Corals: Microstructure vs Formation Mechanism

Laszlo Granasy et al.

Summary: Researchers investigate the adaptation of phase-field theory developed for complex polycrystalline structures to model crystallization in biological systems, demonstrating its capabilities by simulating various microstructures found in mollusk shells and coral skeletons. They compare classical ion-by-ion addition calcification route with a nonclassical route involving crystallization of an amorphous precursor, finding that the nonclassical route's time-scale is more realistic. The resemblance between simulated and natural biominerals suggests that biological structures' underlying design principles can be understood through simple math and simulated by phase-field theory beneath the complexity observed in living organisms.
