Brain Structural Changes During Juvenile Fibromyalgia: Relationships With Pain, Fatigue, and Functional Disability

Maria Sunol et al.

Summary: This study characterized gray matter volume alterations in juvenile FM patients for the first time, with reductions in the aMCC region associated with pain. Patients with higher functional disability in the juvenile FM group had larger GMV in inferior frontal regions linked to affective, self-referential, and language-related processes. The findings showed partial overlap between juvenile and adult FM, particularly in the anterior/posterior cingulate cortices.

Common and stimulus-type-specific brain representations of negative affect

Marta Ceko et al.

Summary: This study combines functional magnetic resonance imaging and predictive modeling to investigate the representations of generalized and stimulus-type-specific negative affect in the brain. The results show that generalized negative affect is encoded in distributed brain regions, while stimulus-type-specific negative affect is encoded in early sensory pathways. Both types of representations are important for predicting subjective experience.

Processing of pain by the developing brain: evidence of differences between adolescent and adult females

Han Tong et al.

Summary: Adolescence is a sensitive period for both brain development and the emergence of chronic pain, particularly in females. This study compares pain perception and brain responses in female adolescents and adults and finds that adolescents show greater sensitivity to low-pain and stronger pain-evoked brain responses.

Epidermal Neurite Density in Skin Biopsies From Patients With Juvenile Fibromyalgia

Alexis Boneparth et al.

Summary: Abnormal small-fiber pathology is common in adolescents with FM, with similar prevalence as in adults with FM. Further studies are needed to fully understand the clinical implications of these findings.
