Blinding and sham control methods in trials of physical, psychological, and self-management interventions for pain (article I): a systematic review and description of methods

David Hohenschurz-Schmidt et al.

Summary: Blinding in randomized controlled trials of pain therapies poses challenges due to the complex and participatory nature of these treatments. A systematic overview was conducted to develop standards for the design, implementation, and reporting of control interventions in efficacy and mechanistic trials. The review included 198 unique control interventions, covering a range of physical, psychological, and self-management treatments. The similarity between control and active interventions varied across different aspects, and additional methods to enhance blinding were identified.

Summary: Data is essential for research, but with the increasing internationalization of research, complex study designs, and stricter legislation, high-quality data collection, management, and storage have become more important and challenging. REDCap, as a research electronic data capture platform, offers a possible solution to address these challenges faced by clinical researchers.

Responsiveness of an activity tracker as a measurement tool in a knee osteoarthritis clinical trial (ACTIVe-OA study)

Shirley P. Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, the use of an activity tracker in an osteoarthritis clinical trial was assessed for its responsiveness and validity. The results showed that the activity trackers did not demonstrate significant responsiveness or validity compared to currently recommended outcome measures in osteoarthritis clinical trials. The lack of a gold standard outcome measure and the complex interplay between pain and function may have contributed to the lack of correlation.

Zelen design clinical trials: why, when, and how

Gregory E. Simon et al.

Summary: Zelen design trials are often used to evaluate the real-world effects of treatment strategies, particularly for conditions with incomplete adherence. These trials require a waiver of informed consent prior to random assignment of treatment and researchers must consider the scientific and ethical implications. Analysis of Zelen trials compares outcomes based on original assignment, regardless of participant refusal.
