Use of ozonation technology to combat viruses and bacteria in aquatic environments: problems and application perspectives for SARS-CoV-2

Leticia Reggiane de Carvalho Costa et al.

Summary: COVID-19 is a global health threat that spreads primarily through respiratory droplets and contact with aerosol-infected surfaces. The virus has also been detected in aqueous matrices, and ozone treatment shows promising results in inactivating viruses and bacteria, ensuring water safety and protecting human health from exposure.

Presence, behaviour and removal of selected organic micropollutants through drinking water treatment

Josep Borrull et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence and removal of 60 organic micropollutants in a drinking water treatment plant, revealing that granular activated carbon and ozonation are the most efficient removal technologies. Additionally, some compounds were still not effectively removed in the finished drinking water.

Caffeine removal from aqueous media by adsorption: An overview of adsorbents evolution and the kinetic, equilibrium and thermodynamic studies

Suyanne Angie Lunelli Bachmann et al.

Summary: This paper provides a systematic review of caffeine removal by the adsorption process, showing that adsorption is the preferred method for caffeine removal with capacities ranging between 10 and 1000 mg g(-1), and the pseudo-second order and Langmuir isotherm models are the best for fitting experimental data. Future research should focus on mechanistic understanding of adsorption, development of new adsorbents, and consideration of other kinetic models and thermodynamic studies.

Ultrasound as an Advanced Oxidative Process: A Review on Treating Pharmaceutical Compounds

Leticia Reggiane de Carvalho Costa et al.

Summary: Ultrasound treatment is considered an emerging method for water and effluent treatment due to its ability to degrade complex contaminants. It offers advantages such as cleanliness and safety, with minimal secondary pollution compared to other advanced oxidation processes. Research on the synergistic effects of ultrasound with other technologies for medication oxidation is important, as is assessing toxicity and biodegradability in treating water and effluent with emerging pollutants. Future studies should focus on understanding mechanistic effects of sonochemical reactions, classifying intermediates, and developing new treatment technologies.
