The effect of different training frequency on bone mineral density in older adults. A comparative systematic review and meta-analysis

Anna-Lena Zitzmann et al.

Summary: Higher training frequency of at least 2 sessions per week significantly improves lumbar spine bone mineral density, while the effect on hip bone mineral density is less pronounced. Study duration and exercise type are important factors influencing the impact of training frequency on bone density.

A Review on Aging, Sarcopenia, Falls, and Resistance Training in Community-Dwelling Older Adults

Filipe Rodrigues et al.

Summary: As aging population increases, sarcopenia and fall risk become public health concerns. Falls are linked to reduced functionality, increased morbidity and mortality. Treating fall-related injuries is costly. Active lifestyle is crucial in reducing falls. Given the importance of muscle mass, strength, bone density, and cartilage function, resistance training positively impacts the elderly. This review examined the evidence on resistance training methods for the elderly to reduce falls and their consequences.

Effects of Hormone Therapy and Exercise on Bone Mineral Density in Healthy Women-A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Clara Born et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether enhancing hormone therapy (HT) with exercise increases the effect of HT on bone mineral density. The results showed that the addition of exercise did not significantly enhance the effect of HT on bone density at the lumbar spine and femoral neck.

Bone-loading exercises versus risedronate for the prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women with low bone mass: a randomized controlled trial

Nancy Waltman et al.

Summary: In postmenopausal women with low bone mass, treatment with risedronate significantly improved spine bone mineral density compared to exercise or control groups. Additionally, there were significant differences in bone formation and resorption markers between the risedronate group and the exercise and control groups.

Effects of different exercise intensity on bone mineral density in adults: a comparative systematic review and meta-analysis

S. Kast et al.

Summary: The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the effect of different exercise intensities on bone mineral density at the lumbar spine and hip in adults. The results showed that while high-intensity exercise had a slightly more pronounced effect on bone density, there were no significant differences between the groups. This suggests that alternating between lower and higher intensity exercise may be a promising option in intervention studies.

Effect of Strength Training Protocol on Bone Mineral Density for Postmenopausal Women with Osteopenia/Osteoporosis Assessed by Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA)

Iulian Stefan Holubiac et al.

Summary: This study introduces a resistance training protocol specifically designed for postmenopausal women with osteopenia/osteoporosis and monitors its effect on lumbar spine bone mineral density. The results showed a significant increase in BMD in the exercise group, while the increase in the control group was not statistically significant.

Exercise Reduces the Number of Overall and Major Osteoporotic Fractures in Adults. Does Supervision Make a Difference? Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Isabelle Hoffmann et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of exercise on low-trauma overall and major osteoporotic fractures and determine the role of supervision in the exercise program. The results showed significant effects of exercise on reducing fracture incidence, with supervision playing a crucial role in fracture reduction. Home-based exercise protocols should implement online classes for consistent supervision.

Effects of Exercise and Bisphosphonate-Therapy on Bone Mineral Density in Healthy Women - A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Christopher Klotz et al.

Summary: The present study found that the combination of bisphosphonate treatment and exercise training did not show significantly higher effects on bone density compared to bisphosphonate therapy alone at the lumbar spine and/or femoral neck. However, there was high heterogeneity among the included studies, which may be attributed to different training protocols.

The effect of exercise intensity on bone in postmenopausal women (part 2): A meta-analysis

Summary: Meta-analysis based on exercise intensity revealed that high intensity exercise has a stronger positive effect on lumbar spine BMD in postmenopausal women compared to low or moderate intensity exercise. Resistance training, potentially combined with impact training, appears to be the most effective osteogenic stimulus for the spine and hip.
