A general arene C-H functionalization strategy via electron donor-acceptor complex photoactivation

Abhishek Dewanji et al.

Summary: The photoactivation of electron donor-acceptor complexes is a sustainable, selective, and versatile strategy for generating radical species. This study introduces triarylsulfonium salts as acceptors in photoactive electron donor-acceptor complexes, enabling a broader application in aryl radical formation. The regioselective installation of the sulfonium salt label in native aromatic compounds by C-H sulfenylation allows for the development of metal-free protocols for the alkylation and cyanation of arenes.

Synthesis of Sulfilimines Enabled by Copper-Catalyzed S-Arylation of Sulfenamides

Qingjin Liang et al.

Summary: This article describes an unprecedented synthetic route to sulfilimines through a copper catalyzed Chan-Lam-type coupling reaction of sulfenamides. The key to success is the chemoselective S-arylation of S(II) sulfenamides to form S(IV) sulfilimines, which overrides the competitive and thermodynamically favored C-N bond formation. The selectivity is achieved through a selective transmetallation event where bidentate sulfenamide coordination promotes the S-arylation pathway. The mild and environmentally friendly catalytic conditions allow for a wide range of functional group compatibility, enabling the efficient preparation of various diaryl or alkyl aryl sulfilimines.

Cu-Mediated Thianthrenation and Phenoxathiination of Arylborons

Xiao-Yue Chen et al.

Summary: The development of novel and reactive linchpins for carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond formation reactions has greatly contributed to the success of synthetic chemistry. This study reports the efficient synthesis of aryl sulfonium salts, a versatile electrophilic linchpin, through a novel Cu-mediated thianthrenation and phenoxathiination. Furthermore, the formal thianthrenation of arenes is achieved through the sequential Ir-catalyzed C-H borylation and Cu-mediated thianthrenation, providing a complementary method for late-stage functionalization of pharmaceuticals.

Sulfur-Arylation of Sulfenamides via Chan-Lam Coupling with Boronic Acids: Access to High Oxidation State Sulfur Pharmacophores

Jonathan A. Ellman et al.

Summary: Sulfur-arylation of sulfenamides via a Chan-Lam-type coupling with boronic acids is reported, leading to the formation of sulfilimines. A broad range of aryl and alkyl sulfenamides and boronic acids were used as reactants. The utility of this reaction was demonstrated by introducing sulfilimines into approved drugs and accessing medicinally relevant sulfoximines and sulfondiimines through derivatization of sulfilimine products.

Difluorocarbene-Induced Ring-Opening Difluoromethylation-Halogenation of Cyclic (Thio)Ethers with TMSCF2X (X=Br, Cl)**

Rongyi Zhang et al.

Summary: A simple strategy using difluorocarbene to activate carbon-chalcogen bonds is reported for the ring-opening difluoromethylation-halogenation of cyclic (thio)ethers. This reaction proceeds through the in situ protonation of previously little-known difluoromethylene oxonium or sulfonium ylide intermediates, followed by ring-opening with halide ion to yield halogenated acyclic difluoromethyl (thio)ethers. TMSCF2X (X=Br, Cl) serves as unique reagents for both difluorocarbene source and halide ion source in this synthetic purpose.

Tritiation of aryl thianthrenium salts with a molecular palladium catalyst

Da Zhao et al.

Summary: Tritium labelling is a critical tool for pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies, and tritium gas is preferred for labelling due to its high isotopic purity. While heterogeneous catalysts like palladium supported on carbon are commonly used for tritiation reactions, their reaction mechanism can result in the reduction of other functional groups present in pharmaceuticals.
