Application of self-organizing map (SOM) and K-means clustering algorithms for portraying geochemical anomaly patterns in Moalleman district, NE Iran

Amirreza Bigdeli et al.

Summary: In this study, the regional geochemical patterns of regularly sampled stream sediment data in the Moalleman district, northeast Iran were revealed using K-means and self-organizing map (SOM) as clustering methods. The data was processed using isometric log-ratio (ilr) transformation and principal component analysis (PCA), and then clustered using K-means and SOM. A supervised SOM model was also used to locate high anomalous zones. The results showed that the SOM models were superior to K-means in delineating geochemical anomaly targets.
