Formation of the Maoniuping giant REE deposit: Constraints from mineralogy and in situ bastnasite U-Pb geochronology

Qiang Weng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the time and processes of hydrothermal mineralization using the Maoniuping giant rare earth elements deposit as a case study. The results show that rare earth minerals occur in different forms, with one originating from magmatic processes and others from hydrothermal processes. The mineral compositions and isotopic dating suggest a continuous magmatic-hydrothermal evolution for the rare earth mineralization in the Maoniuping alkaline complex.

Temporal and Petrogenetic Links Between Mesoproterozoic Alkaline and Carbonatite Magmas at Mountain Pass, California

Kathryn E. Watts et al.

Summary: Mountain Pass is the site of the most economically important rare earth element (REE) deposit in the United States. Studying the genesis of this deposit is crucial for meeting the high demand of critical minerals. By analyzing the geochronology and geochemistry of zircon crystals, this study provides constraints on the igneous underpinnings of the Mountain Pass REE deposit. The results support a model of prolonged alkaline and carbonatite magmatism over millions of years, with magma deriving from a metasomatized mantle source containing elevated REEs and other diagnostic components.

Carbonatitic footprints in the Bayan Obo REEs deposit as seen from pyrite geochemistry

Hai-Dong She et al.

Summary: This study examines the genesis of the Bayan Obo REEs deposit through the analysis of pyrite characteristics. The results show that the ore-hosting dolomite originated from partial melting of the upper mantle, and the contribution of the Paleozoic thermal events to the primary REEs mineralization is minor.

Mineralogical characteristics and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic compositions of banded REE ores in the Bayan Obo deposit, Inner Mongolia, China: Implications for their formation and origin

Zuoyu Gao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the mineral assemblages and geochemical characteristics of minerals in banded ores in the Bayan Obo REE deposit, revealing that the REE minerals were mainly monazite, bastna site, and parisite. The overprinting of these minerals on gangue minerals suggests REE mineralization occurred in the late hydrothermal stage, leading to progressive enrichment in REEs, F, Sr, and Ba. Additionally, the study proposed that fluorite and bastna site crystallized from ferrocarbonatite and fine-grained dolomite, with a mixture of HIMU mantle and global marine sediments serving as the source of REEs.

Identification of ∼1.3 Ga hydrothermal zircon from the giant Bayan Obo REE deposit (China): Implication for dating geologically-complicated REE ore system

Xiao-Chun Li et al.

Summary: The Bayan Obo deposit in China is home to the largest rare earth elements (REE) resource in the world. The genesis of this deposit is still in debate due to uncertainties surrounding the mineralization age. Zircon grains found in the REE ore of Bayan Obo have unique compositional features and textures, suggesting a hydrothermal origin and providing important evidence for determining the timing of REE mineralization.

The effect of fluid-aided modification on the Sm-Nd and Th-Pb geochronology of monazite and bastnasite: Implication for resolving complex isotopic age data in REE ore systems

Xiao-Chun Li et al.

Summary: Isotopic dating studies on the Bayan Obo REE deposit in China show that fluid-assisted modification of monazite and bastnasite results in varied Th-Pb ages, with some representing partial isotopic resetting. The study also suggests resistance of Sm-Nd isotopes but susceptibility of Th-(U)-Pb isotopes to fluid-aided modification, cautioning against younger Th-U-Pb dates in geologically complicated deposits.

Mineralogy and U-Pb geochronology of REE fluorocarbonates from the Gansha Obo REE deposit, northwest China

Ao Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the carbonate mineral assemblage in the Gansha Obo REE deposit in northwestern China, revealing bastna center dot site as the primary ore mineral and parisite and synchysite as secondary minerals. U-Pb dating of bastna center dot site and synchysite provided ages indicating the timing of REE mineralization and a later tectono-thermal event. The results highlight the significance of REE carbonate U-Pb dating in understanding REE mineral precipitation and identifying regional tectono-thermal events.
