Ferroelectrics and photovoltaics in endohedral fullerenes-based van der Waals heterostructures

Jie Li et al.

Summary: Using density functional theory calculations, this study investigated the ferroelectric, electronic, and optical properties of bias-controllable endohedral fullerene molecules. The results showed that Cr@C-28 has a large electric dipole moment and an appropriate bandgap, and sandwiching it between other materials can combine their properties, potentially leading to the development of ferroelectric-photovoltaic materials.

Physical characterization of BiFeO3-based thin films with enhanced properties for photovoltaic applications

Marcos A. S. Mariano et al.

Summary: This study reports the multifunctional properties of lead-free BiFeO3-La (BFO-La) thin films, with a focus on the effects of lanthanum doping on structural and optical properties. Lanthanum doping was found to significantly affect defect concentrations, crystallinity, and optical absorption properties of the thin films. The Bi1-xLaxFeO3 (x = 0-20) compositions showed lower direct bandgap values and are considered potential candidate materials for high-performance photovoltaic devices.

Effects of Sm and Cr co-doping on structural, magnetic, optical and photocatalytic properties of BiFeO3 nanoparticles

Mekonnen Tefera Kebede et al.

Summary: In this study, bismuth ferrite and co-doped nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using the tartaric acid modified sol-gel method. The structural phase transition and improved photocatalytic properties were investigated through XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and FESEM techniques. The results demonstrated that the co-doped nanoparticles exhibited enhanced ferromagnetic and photocatalytic behaviors compared to pristine bismuth ferrite, which can be attributed to changes in ionic radii, oxygen vacancies, and narrow bandgap.

Tailoring of a visible-light-absorbing biaxial ferroelectric towards broadband self-driven photodetection

Shiguo Han et al.

Summary: This study presents a lead-iodide hybrid biaxial ferroelectric with large spontaneous polarization and a narrow direct bandgap, exhibiting exceptional in-plane photovoltaic effects. The symmetry breaking of 4/mmmFmm2 species results in its biaxial attributes, providing four equivalent polar directions for photovoltaic applications in the crystallographic bc-plane. The coupling between ferroelectricity and photovoltaic effects in this material holds great potential for self-driven photodetection and future optoelectronic device applications.
