A Review of Transparent Sensors for Photoacoustic Imaging Applications

Summary: Photoacoustic imaging is a novel noninvasive and nonradiation imaging modality that combines the deep penetration of ultrasonic imaging with the high specificity of optical imaging. Transparent ultrasonic sensors, including optics-based, piezoelectric-based, and MEMS-based sensors, have been developed to overcome the limitations of conventional sensors and enable direct delivery of excitation light for better signal quality in photoacoustic imaging applications.

Improving the Sensitivity of Planar Fabry-Perot Cavities via Adaptive Optics and Mode Filtering

Summary: The researchers introduced a theoretical framework to study arbitrary light-cavity mode interactions in planar FP cavities, and found that optical aberrations reduce sensitivity by exciting higher-order spatial modes. Certain Zernike aberrations were identified as playing a dominant role in sensitivity degradation, but sensitivity loss can be significantly recovered with appropriate wavefront correction or mode filtering. Experimental demonstration showed that a synergistic combination of adaptive optics and passive mode filtering can improve the sensitivity of realistic planar FP micro-cavity sensors up to threefold.
