Long-term seawater anti-corrosion properties of Al alloy triggered by femtosecond laser structuring with phase change

Rahul A. Rajan et al.

Summary: By adopting a technique of femtosecond laser micro/nano-structuring, the surface of aluminium alloy material has been successfully modified into long-term stable anti-corrosive properties, with a measured corrosion rate two orders of magnitude smaller than the bare sample. This is attributed to the formation of surface micro/nano-structure with thick stable oxide layers and significant phase change from crystalline to amorphous induced by laser stress and compressive strain.
