Micro-texturing of polymer surfaces using lasers: a review

Amarachi F. Obilor et al.

Summary: Micro- and nanoscale structures produced on surfaces of metals, polymers, ceramics, and glasses have many important applications in different fields. Laser ablation using ultrashort pulses has become the prominent technique for generating different surface structures. This paper reviews the current research and progress in laser ablation of polymers, discussing the interaction between laser and materials, polymer properties influenced by laser, laser texturing methods, and achievable surface functionalities. The objective is to present a thorough review on laser ablation and laser surface modification of industrially used polymers, with considerable attention given to direct laser interference patterning.

Combined effect of laser texturing and carburizing on the bonding strength of DLC coatings deposited on medical titanium alloy

Bangzhu Dong et al.

Summary: The study found that the coupling of the mechanical-physical-chemical effects induced by laser texturing and carburizing reaction can enhance the wettability and specific surface area of the Ti6Al4V substrate surface. This provides mechanical self-locking and matching chemical properties between the Ti6Al4V substrate and DLC coatings, resulting in improved bonding strength.

Synergistic effect of surface textures and DLC coatings for enhancing friction and wear performances of Si3N4/TiC ceramic

Youqiang Xing et al.

Summary: Surface textures of dimples combined with DLC coatings can significantly enhance the tribological properties of Si3N4/TiC ceramics, with the combination showing the best efficiency in reducing friction, adhesion, and wear. This improvement is attributed to the synergistic effect of DLC coatings and surface textures, leading to the formation of lubrication film, debris capture, increased surface hardness, and reduced contact area.

Preparation of micro-textures on cemented carbide substrate surface by plasma-assisted laser machining to enhance the PVD tool coatings adhesion

Xiangfeng Meng et al.

Summary: The study introduces a plasma-assisted laser machining approach to fabricate micro-textures, aiming to enhance the adhesion properties of PVD coatings. Experimental results demonstrate that plasma/laser textured substrates can improve the wettability, phase composition, roughness, and hardness of the coatings, thereby enhancing the interfacial properties of PVD coatings.

A study on tribological properties of textured Co-Cr-Mo alloy for artificial hip joints

Yujie Han et al.

Summary: In this study, innovative patterned surface micro textures were manufactured on Co-Cr-Mo alloy by laser surface texturing (LST), improving its hardness and wettability. Frictional experiments showed that concentric circles micro textures had the best tribological properties, significantly reducing COF and weight loss. The relationship between surface wettability and COF of the textured Co-Cr-Mo alloy was discussed and the mechanism for the effects of the surface micro-textures was revealed.
