Miniaturized Design of a 1 x 2 Plasmonic Demultiplexer Based on Metal-Insulator-Metal Waveguide for Telecommunication Wavelengths

M. A. Butt et al.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical analysis of a compact 1 x 2 plasmonic demultiplexer based on a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide. Two hollow circular cavities are side coupled to the bus waveguide on both sides, designed to resonate at the working wavelengths of 1310 nm and 1550 nm. The mechanism of light coupling to an MIM waveguide was not considered in previous studies, thus a silicon tapered mode converter is integrated to efficiently convert a dielectric to a plasmonic mode in the plasmonic demultiplexer. The footprint of the device is 6 μm x 6 μm. The crosstalk at P1 and P2 is about 14.07 dB and 13.67 dB for the transmission wavelength of 1310 nm and 1550 nm, respectively.

Dual-Band Perfect Absorber Based on All-Dielectric GaAs Metasurface for Terahertz Wave

Xiaodi Weng et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple design of a dual-band terahertz metasurface perfect absorber (MPA) was proposed using a complementary-star-shaped (CSS) structure all-dielectric GaAs array. Simulation results showed that the MPA achieved over 99.9% absorbance at 0.715 THz and 0.861 THz, respectively, and high Q-factors of about 79.58 and 78.27. The perfect absorption was mainly due to the excitations of surface plasmonic polaritons (SPPs) modes. The absorption properties of the MPA could be adjusted by varying the geometric parameters of the unit-cell structure. The designed dual-band MPA has great potential in various terahertz applications such as sensing, detecting, thermal emitting, and imaging.

Hybrid metasurface perfect absorbers for temperature and biosensing applications

M. A. Butt et al.

Summary: This work presents a comprehensive study of the sensing capabilities of a hybrid metasurface perfect absorber (HMSPA) based on square meta-atoms (S-MAs) and hollow-square meta-atoms (HS-MAs). Both designs show high absorption rates in the narrowband region, making them suitable for filtering applications. The HMSPA with HS-MAs is particularly sensitive to variations in the refractive index, which is ideal for biosensing applications. Additionally, the deposition of a temperature-sensing material on the metasurface enables temperature sensing. The proposed HMSPA structures have potential applications in filtering, biosensing, and temperature sensing.

Plasmonic all-optical modulator based on the coupling of a surface Plasmon stub-filter and a meandered MIM waveguide

Shiva Khani et al.

Summary: In this paper, an all-optical plasmonic modulator with a tunable data wavelength is designed. By using separate waveguide paths for data and control signals, interference between the signals is prevented. According to simulation results, the maximum transmittance of the data wavelength can be modulated from 8.1% to 50.2% by applying both data and control signals simultaneously. The designed structure has separate and isolated paths, a relatively small footprint, and a symmetrical structure, making it suitable for complex integrated optical circuits.

A very high-resolution refractive index sensor based on hybrid topology of photonic crystal cavity and plasmonic nested split-ring resonator

Leila Hajshahvaladi et al.

Summary: An optical refractive index sensor based on a hybrid topology of photonic crystal and plasmonic is designed in this paper. The sensor structure consists of nested circular metallic split-ring resonators embedded in a hexagonal cavity of a rod-type photonic crystal. Numerical simulation using the finite-difference time-domain method shows that a hybrid mode is created by the cooperative coupling between surface plasmon polaritons induced by the split-ring resonators and resonant photonic crystal cavity modes. This hybrid mode not only increases the sensitivity of the sensor but also provides a much higher figure of merit compared to purely plasmonic or purely photonic crystal sensors. Simulation results demonstrate high sensitivity and excellent figure of merit when the proposed sensor is exposed to hazardous gases, showing considerable improvement compared to previous works.
