Temporal trends in the epidemiology of childhood severe visual impairment and blindness in the UK

Summary: This study investigates the changing epidemiology of severe visual impairment (SVI) and blindness (BL) in children in the UK in the 21st century. The overall incidence rates remained stable, with higher rates in infancy. Mortality among children diagnosed in infancy declined, despite an increase in the overall proportion with non-ophthalmic impairments/disorders. The relative contribution of different groups of disorders changed over time, with an increase in cerebral visual impairment and hereditary conditions. The study highlights the increasing complexity and heterogeneity of childhood visual disability.

Summary: In infants with ROP, intravitreal aflibercept did not meet the criteria for noninferiority compared to laser photocoagulation in terms of treatment success at week 24. Rescue treatment was less required in the intravitreal aflibercept group, but the serious adverse event rates were higher in the laser photocoagulation group. Further data would be needed for more definitive conclusions on the comparative effects of these treatments.

Higher Visual Function Deficits in Children With Cerebral Visual Impairment and Good Visual Acuity

Trends in Retinopathy of Prematurity Screening and Treatment: 2008-2018

Summary: Analysis of data from US NICUs between 2008 and 2018 revealed an increased proportion of ROP screening among eligible infants, with a decrease in overall and severe ROP cases, retinal ablation procedures, and an increase in the use of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor treatment. Despite the overall improvements, 10% of infants were still not screened for ROP, indicating a potential for further enhancement in healthcare delivery.
