A real-time data-driven framework for the identification of steady states of marine machinery

Christian Velasco-Gallego et al.

Summary: Maritime transportation is the primary means of long-haul transportation of goods to and from the EU. However, it is associated with a significant number of casualties and fatalities due to ship equipment damage and machinery failures. To address this issue, the Internet of Ships paradigm has emerged, but it still faces challenges such as data preparation and real-time detection of steady states. This study proposes a data-driven framework based on image generation and connected component analysis to identify steady states of marine machinery. The framework outperforms traditional clustering models, demonstrating its effectiveness in real-time detection.

Modified quantitative systems theoretic accident model and processes (STAMP) analysis: A catastrophic ship engine failure case

Bulut Ozan Ceylan et al.

Summary: Despite the rapid advancement of technology and the increasing complexity of systems, conventional accident analysis techniques are still used in many sectors. However, system theory-based approaches, such as STAMP, offer innovative analytic techniques with strong detection capability. This study presents a hybrid quantitative methodology for complex system accidents based on a system engineering perspective.

Application of a SPAR-H based framework to assess human reliability during emergency response drill for man overboard on ships

Emre Akyuz et al.

Summary: Emergency preparedness is crucial for successful emergency responses at sea. Regular emergency drills are conducted to maintain acceptable levels of preparedness. However, the risks associated with drill operations are often not adequately considered. This study proposes a hybrid approach that combines the SPAR-H method and fuzzy multiple attributive group decision-making method to evaluate overall risk, including human errors, during emergency drills.

RADIS: A real-time anomaly detection intelligent system for fault diagnosis of marine machinery

Christian Velasco-Gallego et al.

Summary: By enhancing data accessibility, data-driven models can be implemented to empower strategies in O&M activities. To address the issues in data-driven model applications in the maritime industry, a Real-time Anomaly Detection Intelligent System (RADIS) framework is proposed, which is capable of detecting data patterns that deviate significantly from normal operational behavior.

Towards a probabilistic approach for risk analysis of nuclear-powered icebreakers using FMEA and FRAM

Shanshan Fu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a probabilistic risk analysis method for nuclear-powered icebreakers in independent, escort, and convoy operations in ice-covered waters. The method incorporates failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and functional resonance analysis method (FRAM) to analyze failure modes and accident scenarios. Targeted risk control options are proposed based on the critical accident scenarios and their associated functions and coupling changes.

RISK ANALYSIS OF GROUNDING ACCIDENTS BY MAPPING A FAULT TREE INTO A BAYESIAN NETWORK

Cenk Sakar et al.

Summary: Ship groundings, accounting for approximately one-third of accidents, are a serious concern. Factors such as lack of proper look-out, improper ECDIS and radar use significantly contribute to groundings. Maintaining a safe navigation watch is crucial for preventing future accidents.
