Identification of Kuroshio meanderings south of Japan via a topological data analysis for sea surface height

Takashi Sakajo et al.

Summary: This study proposes an algorithm to identify stable Kuroshio meanderings by extracting topological features from a sea surface height dataset. The algorithm provides a unique symbolic representation and a discrete graph structure based on mathematical theory, which can detect structurally stable meanderings. The results are consistent with existing observations, and the algorithm detects 5 meandering periods, revealing the splitting of a large eddy into two small eddies at the termination of most meanderings.

JCOPE-FGO: an eddy-resolving quasi-global ocean reanalysis product

Shoichiro Kido et al.

Summary: In this research, the newly developed eddy-resolving quasi-global ocean reanalysis product JCOPE-FGO is described and assessed. It is found that the product can accurately capture the hydrographic structures and upper ocean circulation features of the world ocean. The inclusion of global river runoff is crucial for representing seasonal variability.

An ensemble Kalman filter system with the Stony Brook Parallel Ocean Modelv1.0

Shun Ohishi et al.

Summary: This study develops an EnKF-based regional ocean data assimilation system and compares the analysis accuracy and geostrophic balance under different settings. The results show that the combination of IAU and RTPP significantly improves both balance and analysis accuracy. The MULT method does not maintain balance and reproduce the flow field regardless of whether IAU is applied or not.

Long-term variations in ocean acidification indices in the Northwest Pacific from 1993 to 2018

Miho Ishizu et al.

Summary: The study investigated long-term variations in ocean acidification indices in the Northwest Pacific from 1993 to 2018 using observational data and a biogeochemical model. The results showed consistent patterns of acidification in the subtropical and Kuroshio Extension regions, while relative alkalinization was observed in the subarctic region. Regional differences in acidification and alkalinization were attributed to spatially variable biological processes and physical redistribution of DIC.

A quasi-physical sea surface temperature method for the split-window data from the Second-generation Global Imager (SGLI) onboard the Global Change Observation Mission-Climate (GCOM-C) satellite

Yukio Kurihara et al.

Summary: The study describes a quasi-physical method for determining sea surface temperatures, showing biases of -0.097 K and 0.28 K during the day and -0.18 K and 0.28 K at night. High biases of nearly -0.5 K were calculated for SSTs around 305 K. Residual analysis suggests that the high negative bias is due to insufficient information on atmospheric correction brought by split-window data.

Effect of Ocean Fluid Changes on Pressure on the Seafloor: Ocean Assimilation Data Analysis on Warm-Core Rings off the Southeastern Coast of Hokkaido, Japan on an Interannual Timescale

Takuya Hasegawa et al.

Summary: Analysis of ocean assimilation data from 2001 to 2018 off the southeastern coast of Hokkaido, Japan reveals the relationship between sea surface height (SSH) and seawater density anomalies affecting seafloor pressure anomalies (PSF). Positive SSH anomalies are partially offset by negative seawater density anomalies, particularly in offshore regions with depths over 1000 meters. Introducing oceanic isostasy anomalies (OIAs) as a way to quantify the barotropic effects of SSH and seawater density anomalies on PSF changes on an interannual timescale is recommended.

Next generation of Bluelink ocean reanalysis with multiscale data assimilation: BRAN2020

Matthew A. Chamberlain et al.

Summary: BRAN2020 is an ocean reanalysis method that combines observations with a global ocean circulation model to produce a four-dimensional estimate of the ocean state. It shows closer agreement to observations than previous versions, with reduced misfits between reanalysed and observed fields. The dataset is publicly available and intended for use by the research community.
