Quality of Life after Bariatric Surgery-A Systematic Review

Regina Sierzantowicz et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the evidence regarding the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients who underwent bariatric surgery at least nine years prior. The results demonstrate that bariatric treatment seems to provide a persistent benefit in terms of HRQOL, especially in its physical component score. However, some patients may be less likely to benefit from bariatric treatment due to psychological predispositions.

Factors associated with weight regain post-bariatric surgery: a systematic review

Dimitrios I. Athanasiadis et al.

Summary: This systematic review identified that at least 1 in 6 patients after bariatric surgery had weight regain of >= 10%. Factors related to weight regain were categorized into anatomical, genetic, dietary, psychiatric, and temporal factors. Understanding these factors can help counsel patients before surgery and guide postoperative strategies to minimize weight regain risk.

Preoperative psychological characteristics affecting mid-term outcome after bariatric surgery: a follow-up study

Carlo Lai et al.

Summary: Psychological factors such as depression and alexithymia were found to be associated with lower weight loss percentages after bariatric surgery at 30 months follow-up. Patients with pre-operative levels of depression and alexithymia showed less weight loss compared to non-depressed and non-alexithymic patients. This suggests that psychological factors may play a role in the long-term outcomes of bariatric surgery.
