It is strongly recommended to not conduct, fund, or publish research studies that use spot urine samples with estimating equations to assess individuals' sodium (salt) intake in association with health outcomes: a policy statement of the World Hypertension League, International Society of Hypertension and Resolve to Save Lives

Norman R. C. K. Campbell et al.

Summary: Spot urine samples with estimating equations have been used to assess individuals' sodium intake in association with health outcomes. However, this method is associated with large random and systematic errors, leading to spurious health outcome associations. In response to false claims of the method's validity, several health organizations have issued a policy statement strongly recommending against conducting, funding, or publishing research using spot urine samples with estimating equations. Literature reviews on the health impacts of reducing dietary sodium should explicitly acknowledge the unreliable nature of studies using spot and short duration timed urine samples with estimating equations.

Marialaura Bonaccio et al.

Summary: Consumption of a high proportion of ultra-processed food (UPF) in the diet is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause mortality, partly due to its high dietary content of sugar. Additionally, some established biomarkers of CVD risk are likely to be involved in linking UPF consumption to mortality.

Differential influences of dietary sodium on blood pressure regulation based on race and sex

Austin T. Robinson et al.

Summary: The incidence and prevalence of hypertension vary between men and women, as well as among different races, with individual variability in how sodium ingestion affects blood pressure. Black individuals have higher rates of hypertension, with some forms treated with high salt diets and others advised to reduce sodium intake. Both biological and socio-economic factors play critical roles in modulating the impact of sodium on cardiovascular health based on race and sex.

Summary: The study found that orally administered fructose, glucose, or high-fructose corn syrup increased vasopressin concentrations, mediated by fructokinase specific to fructose metabolism. Hydration prevented and improved fructose-induced metabolic syndrome, with vasopressin effects mediated by vasopressin 1b receptor. Increased water intake may be beneficial in preventing or treating metabolic syndrome.

Mitochondrial contributions to vascular endothelial dysfunction, arterial stiffness, and cardiovascular diseases

Summary: Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in America, with advancing age being a major risk factor. Vascular dysfunction, characterized by endothelial dysfunction and large elastic artery stiffening, is associated with an increased CVD risk. Mitochondria play a crucial role in maintaining vascular homeostasis, and age- and disease-related impairments in mitochondrial function contribute to vascular dysfunction and increase CVD risk.
