The influenza A virus genome packaging network - complex, flexible and yet unsolved

Celia Jakob et al.

Summary: The genome of influenza A virus consists of eight unique viral RNA segments, and reassortment events can create new IAVs. Recent research suggests that a viral genome packaging mechanism promotes reassortment by delivering the genome segments into the virus particle. However, there is a current shortage of functionally validated intersegmental RNA-RNA interactions in understanding this mechanism.

Influenza A Viruses and Zoonotic Events-AreWe Creating Our Own Reservoirs?

Susanne Kessler et al.

Summary: Zoonotic infections of humans with influenza A viruses (IAVs) from animal reservoirs can lead to severe disease and pandemic outbreaks. The creation of manmade reservoirs through livestock farming has significantly facilitated the transmission of IAVs between humans and animals. Controlling IAV spread within these animal reservoirs and monitoring the emergence of new strains with pandemic potential are crucial in reducing zoonotic events.

Identification of the 5′-Terminal Packaging Signal of the H1N1 Influenza A Virus Neuraminidase Segment at Single-Nucleotide Resolution

Erika Seshimo et al.

Summary: The genome of the influenza A virus consists of eight segments of negative-strand RNA. In this study, researchers focused on identifying the essential sequence for selective packaging in the 5'-terminus of the sixth neuraminidase gene segment vRNA (Seg.6). Mutations in certain regions reduced infectious titers and eliminated mutant vRNAs through competitive packaging with wild-type vRNA. These regions were identified as the 5'-terminal packaging signal for the N1 subtype Seg.6 vRNA.
