Confinement properties of L-mode plasmas in ASDEX Upgrade and full-radius predictions of the TGLF transport model

C. Angioni et al.

Summary: The properties of L-mode confinement have been investigated using both experimental and modeling methods. The comparison between experimental results and modeling predictions shows that the main properties of L-mode confinement can be reproduced by conventional full-radius transport modeling, providing evidence for the first time. However, there are some discrepancies between the modeling predictions and experimental results, especially at high electron heating power and under electron heated conditions.

Radiative pulsed L-mode operation in ARC-class reactors

S. J. Frank et al.

Summary: A new ARC-class, highly-radiative, pulsed, L-mode, burning plasma scenario is developed as a potential alternative to steady-state advanced tokamak scenarios. Pulsed inductive operation and operation in L-mode can alleviate current drive requirements and reduce power handling requirements, respectively, while still maximizing fusion power density.

G. Verdoolaege et al.

Summary: This paper presents the upgraded International Tokamak Physics Activity (ITPA) Global H-mode Confinement Database, and uses regression analysis to estimate global energy confinement scaling in H-mode plasmas. Geometry dependence of the fluctuation intensity in gyrokinetic turbulence

G. M. Staebler et al.

Summary: The investigation focuses on the properties of 3D saturated fluctuation intensity of electric potential in gyrokinetic turbulence simulations, using linear eigenmodes and geometry shape functions to construct a model for accurate calculation of electron and ion energy flux poloidal wavenumber spectrum. New insights are gained into the way zonal flow mixing saturates ion-scale turbulence by controlling the radial wavenumber width of the turbulence spectrum.

The upgraded ASDEX Upgrade contribution to the ITPA confinement database: description and analysis

F. Ryter et al.

Summary: The ITPA multi-machine confinement database has recently been extended to include data from ASDEX Upgrade and JET tokamaks with metallic plasma facing components. The transition from carbon to metallic wall had limited the operation at low density, while similarities were found at medium and high densities. Plasma current and magnetic field dependencies, as well as the impact of triangularity, were clear in the analysis.

Validation of quasi-linear turbulent transport models against plasmas with dominant electron heating for the prediction of ITER PFPO-1 plasmas

C. K. Kiefer et al.

Summary: The study tested the quasi-linear transport models TGLF and QuaLiKiz against experimental results, finding good agreement between profiles obtained from TGLF-SAT1geo and experimental profiles for electron and ion temperatures. However, there is a slight tendency for the model to underpredict central temperatures at high electron/ion temperature ratios.

Ion temperature clamping in Wendelstein 7-X electron cyclotron heated plasmas

M. N. A. Beurskens et al.

Summary: The neoclassical transport optimization of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator has not achieved the high energy confinement of gas fueled ECRH plasmas as predicted, due to observed high levels of turbulent heat transport with characteristics of electron temperature gradient (ETG)/ion temperature gradient (ITG) type. The experiment showed a 'negative ion temperature profile stiffness' in electron-heated plasma, where increasing the ratio of T (e)/T (i) exacerbates turbulent transport. This finding impacts the prospects of future high-performance ECRH scenarios in W7-X and calls for turbulence-suppression techniques.

Verification of a quasi-linear model for gyrokinetic turbulent transport

G. M. Staebler et al.

Summary: This paper verifies and calibrates a new quasi-linear transport model based on a large database of gyrokinetic turbulence simulations. The modification of a key parameter in the model is found to be necessary for better fitting temperature and density gradients. The new model shows significantly improved fit in electron and ion energy fluxes compared to previous saturation models, leading to revisions in related models.
