Diversity and composition of asexual ascomycetes associated with aquatic and terrestrial forest plant debris in Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil) revealed by direct observation

Heloysa Farias da Silva et al.

Summary: Asexual ascomycetes are microfungi that reproduce by mitosis and play an important role in nutrient cycling. These fungi are widely studied globally, with Central and South American regions being hotspots for new species and genera. In Brazil's northeast, particularly Bahia, Paraiba, and Pernambuco states, research on asexual ascomycetes is concentrated, while studies are scarce in Rio Grande do Norte state. A recent study conducted in northern Brazil identified 41 taxa of asexual ascomycetes, including 18 new records for the Rio Grande do Norte region, highlighting the need for further research on the diversity of these fungi.

Ingoldian fungal assemblages from Brazilian rainforests, shrubland and savanna

Patricia Oliveira Fiuza et al.

Summary: Ingoldian fungi are a dominant group in aquatic environments, but they are poorly studied, especially in the tropics. A study in Brazil found several new records of these fungi, which contributes to our understanding of biodiversity and conservation in the studied areas.

Freshwater fungal numbers

Mark S. Calabon et al.

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive account of fungal classification in freshwater habitats, based on biodiversity studies and recent morpho-phylogenetic analyses. The analysis includes 3,870 listed species with additional details on isolation source, habitat, geographical distribution, and molecular data. The study reveals that Ascomycota is the dominant phylum, with Sordariomycetes being the most abundant class in freshwater fungi.

Phylogeny and taxonomy of Circinotrichum, Gyrothrix, Vermiculariopsiella and other setose hyphomycetes

M. Hernandez-Restrepo et al.

Summary: Circinotrichum, Gyrothrix, and Vermiculariopsiella are dematiaceous, setose, saprobic hyphomycetes commonly found on plant litters in tropical to temperate climates. Through multi-locus analysis and morphological studies, it has been revealed that these genera belong to different species and families.
