Surface electromyography of the pelvic floor at 6-8 weeks following delivery: a comparison of different modes of delivery

Kai-Min Guo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the impact of different modes of delivery on pelvic floor muscles through early postpartum sEMG testing. It found that forceps delivery significantly inversely influenced PFM activity, highlighting the importance of considering delivery mode in assessing pelvic floor health.

Post-partum pelvic floor dysfunction assessed on 3D rotational ultrasound: a prospective study on women with first- and second-degree perineal tears and episiotomy

Martina Leombroni et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the morphology and biometry of pelvic floor structures 3 months after birth in women experiencing first- or second-degree perineal tears or undergoing episiotomy during labor. The results showed that these women exhibited abnormal pelvic morphometry on 3D rotational ultrasound 3 months after birth.

An International Continence Society (ICS) report on the terminology for pelvic floor muscle assessment

Helena Frawley et al.

Summary: An extensive update of terminology for female and male pelvic floor muscle assessment has been conducted, including 185 separate definitions/descriptors to aid clinical practice and research. The report was developed through a thorough process of 12 rounds of review and includes input from experts in the field and external referees to ensure accuracy and comprehensiveness. The main aim of this report is to provide a standardized and clinically based terminology for assessing PFM function and dysfunction, making it user-friendly and interpretable by clinicians and researchers of different disciplines.

Reliability, validity and responsiveness of pelvic floor muscle surface electromyography and manometry

Ingeborg Hoff Braekken et al.

Summary: The study aimed to examine the reliability and validity of sEMG in assessing pelvic floor muscle function. Results showed that sEMG has good test-retest intratester reliability and correlates well with manometry, but is not as sensitive as manometry in assessing pelvic floor muscle maximum voluntary contraction and endurance.
